Big Hits Late Lead The Tigers Past Seattle, 4-1

Box Score

Bellevue, Wash. - Closing out non-conference play for the 2015 season, the Tigers went out on top as Pacific downed Seattle, 4-1, on Monday night. Scoring four late runs, Pacific (13-35) came back to overwhelm the Redhawks (26-25) as the two teams met at Bellevue College just outside of Seattle.

Starting slow and coming on hot late, the Tigers came up with runs over the final three innings of play to slide past the Redhawks on the unusual Monday midweek contest. After giving up a run midway through the game, Pacific used two runs in the top of the seventh to take control of the game before scoring insurance runs in the eighth and the ninth to secure the win.

Down one and lacking hits, the Tigers got the ball rolling in the seventh when Brett Sullivan reached safely to start the inning on a two base error to right as he hit a ball to the wall that glanced off the outstretched glove of the Seahawks' rightfielder. Two batters later, Sullivan would plate the first run of the inning when he and freshman Jed Sprague executed a run and hit to come up with the score. After driving in the run, Sprague put himself in position to give the Tigers the lead when he swiped second to record his first career stolen base. The stolen bag would pay off moments later thanks to a little bit of luck when fellow freshman Lucas Halstead chopped a ball up the middle that took a big hop over the top of Seattle's shortstop and into left, allowing Sprague to score what would be the winning run.

In control, Pacific tacked on a third run in the eighth when Nate Verlin grounded a ball to the right side with the bases loaded to bring home J.P. Yakel. Yakel was struck by a pitch to leadoff the inning and moved around the bases on a single by Tyler Sullivan and a walk to Jimmy Gosano. T. Sullivan's single was his second of three on the night as he finished 3-for-4 with a walk.

Leading 3-1, the Tigers grabbed their final run of the game in their last trip to the plate when Danny Mayer hit a mammoth home run to left field with two-outs in the ninth. The second-year Tiger made Seattle's Grant Gunning pay for a mistake pitch on 0-2 as the big left fielder crushed the pitch into the trees in left for his first career home run.

With the three-run cushion, Pacific let Sean Bennetts (2-5) come out for his fourth inning of relief as the junior looked to lock down his second victory of the season. If not for an error in the inning, Bennetts would have closed out the contest but found himself with runners at the corners and the tying run coming to the plate. With two outs, Bennetts handed the ball to Michael Hager (1) who promptly struck out the only batter he would face on the night to hammer home his first save of the season. The strike out was the fifth of the weekend for the righty reliever in just two full innings of work after picking up four over the weekend at Gonzaga.

Bennetts earned the victory for the Tigers as the fourth pitcher into the game after replacing Jake Jenkins. Jenkins was charged with the lone run of the game as Seattle turned a leadoff single into a run thanks to a late wild pitch. Jenkins and fellow starter Will Lydon both threw an inning of relief for the Tigers on their off days after Pacific started closer Vince Arobio. Making his first career start, Arobio went 3.0 IP while allowing just one hit and two walks. He would strike out two while not allowing a run.

The loss went to the Redhawks' starter, Ted Hammond (5-4) as he allowed two runs on four hits in 6.2 IP while striking out seven. Hammond held a no-hitter into the sixth when it was broken up by the first single of the night by T. Sullivan.

Pacific finishes its season with three games at home against Portland next week as the two teams meet at Klein Family Field beginning on Friday, May 15. The opening game of the final series is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
