Box Score Stockton, Calif. - In the finale of a three-game West Coast Conference series at Santa Clara's SCU Softball Field, the Pacific Softball team recorded its second consecutive shutout, pushing its winning streak to four games after taking down Santa Clara 7-0 to seal a sweep on the road. Pacific senior Dani Bonnet hurled seven scoreless frames, striking out two and allowing just five hits while freshman Sydney Lahners and junior Nicole Zapotoczny homered for the Tigers. Pacific improves to 17-33 (5-7 WCC) on the season while Santa Clara falls to 14-32 (4-8 WCC).
After Bonnet worked around a baserunner in the first inning, the Pacific offense went to work in the top of the second as freshman Sydney Lahners launched a home run over the left field fence, her fourth of the season, to give Pacific a 2-0 advantage against Santa Clara starter Brianna Rios (1-10).
Pacific added a two-spot in the top of the third as Sara Anderson reached on an infield single and freshman Molly Bourne worked a walk from Rios. After a Nicole Zapotoczny sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, sophomore Cassidy Gustafson roped a single up the middle to score a pair of Tigers and give Pacific the 4-0 cushion.
Rios was spelled by Ciara Gonzales in the circle, but the results remained largely the same as the fourth inning saw yet another pair of runs for the Orange and Black as Alex Steinmehl struck a double to left field and Melanie Habib followed with a first-pitch triple to center field, plating Steinmehl. Toni Santos then reached on an infield single as Habib came home to put Pacific in a commanding position up 6-0.
In the top of the seventh, Pacific added a two-out solo shot from Zapotoczny, as the junior crushed a pitch down the left field line to extend the Pacific lead to 7-0, setting the stage for Bonnet to close out the Broncos. The final out of the game was recorded on a sliding catch by Molly Bourne in left field, putting an exclamation mark on a great defensive day for the Tiger outfield, despite windy conditions that made fly balls tricky throughout the contest.
Pacific pitched back-to-back shutouts for the first time since Feb. 23-24 of 2012 against Oklahoma State and Iowa State at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Iowa State victory was Bonnet's first career win.
The sweep of SCU was also the first conference sweep for the Tigers since taking down UC Riverside three times on March 23 and 24th of 2013 at Bill Simoni Field. The four games in a row represents the longest winning streak for Pacific since March 23-March 29th of 2013.
Pacific now returns to non-conference action on Wednesday at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley, Calif. as Pacific travels to take on the No. 20 ranked California Golden Bears. The contest is slated for a 4:00 pm first pitch.
