Box Score Stockton, Calif. - In a midweek excursion from West Coast Conference play, the Pacific Softball team registered a 5-0 victory over local rival Sacramento State, snapping a 10 game losing streak. After the victory, Pacific improves to 11-32 on the season while Sacramento State falls to 21-20 after defeat.
Freshman Marissa Young (4-4) tossed a complete-game shutout as the Tigers swept the season series from the Hornets at Bill Simoni Field. Young struck out a career-high five batters over her seven innings of work, surrendering just three hits.
Young's complete game blanking is the first for a Pacific freshman since Dani Bonnet tossed a five-inning shutout against Cal State Fullerton on April 14th, 2012 at Bill Simoni Field, just over three years to the day before tonight's effort.
Pacific jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Young stranded two runners in scoring position in the top of the frame. Pacific wasted no time getting the bats going against Celina Matthias (9-11), who was coming off a run-rule shortened no-hitter against North Dakota and was named the reigning Big Sky Pitcher of the Week for her efforts.
Junior Sara Anderson walked to begin the frame and freshman Molly Bourne followed with a single up the middle, putting runners on the corners with none out for junior Nicole Zapotoczny. Zapotoczny punched a two-RBI single up the middle to give Pacific a 2-0 lea ahead of sophomore Cassidy Gustafson who was hit by a pitch. The next hitter, freshman Rachel Sellers, delivered a groundout to move both runners into scoring position and freshman Sydney Lahners tapped an RBI groundout to put the Orange and Black up 3-0. Alex Steinmehl reached on an error by Paige Castro at shortstop as Gustafson came in to score the fourth run of the inning for Pacific.
The 4-0 cushion would prove to be more than enough for Young. Sacramento State had scoring opportunities in the second, fifth and sixth innings, putting a pair of runners on in each inning, but the freshman from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. was able to get out of jams each time. The Hornets stranded nine runners in the contest, snapping a four-game winning streak.
Pacific added an insurance run in the fourth inning as Bourne shot one through the right side for an RBI single, scoring junior Melanie Habib, who walked with one out. The 5-0 lead would hold as the final score as Young worked effectively throughout the night.
Offensively, Bourne recorded a multi-hit game, her team-leading 12th of the year, while Zapotoczny recorded her team-leading ninth multi-RBI contest of the season.
Pacific will return to action as the five-game homestand continues with a conference series against Loyola Marymount, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday (12:00 pm and 2:00 pm).
