Box Score Fullerton, Calif. - Competing on the second day of the Judi Garman Classic, the Pacific Softball team (6-15) dropped a 4-2 decision to San Diego State (12-7). Pacific got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the first two frames, but SDSU used rallies in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-2 lead that would hold as the final scoreline.
The Tigers sent Dani Bonnet (3-7) to the circle and the Pacific ace delivered a scoreless frame in the top of the first, working around one baserunner. In the bottom of the first, Junior Sara Anderson led off the contest for the Tigers with a single and came into score on an RBI strike from Nicole Zapotoczny, who collected her team-leading 19th RBI. Pacific had a chance for more, but stranded two runners on base.
After Bonnet sent down the Aztecs in order in the top of the second, freshman Rachel Sellers led of with a single to left field and with one out, sophomore Toni Santos worked a walk. With two down, freshman Molly Bourne delivered an RBI single to give Pacific a two-run cushion. Pacific stranded a pair on base as SDSU starter Erica Romero pitched her way out of trouble.
In the top of the third, Bonnet quickly retired the leadoff hitter Leia Ruiz but put two runners on with a walk and a single before Jenavee Peres punched an RBI single to right field to cut the Tigers lead to 2-1. The next hitter, Lorena Bauer doubled to left field to tie the contest at 2-2 but Bonnet was able to induce two groundouts to limit the damage to just two.
Pacific went down in order in the third and SDSU was able to grab the lead in the top of the fourth after two were out. Ruiz and Camello singled and Jordan reached on an error by third baseman sophomore Cassidy Gustafson, scoring a run for a 3-2 lead. The next hitter, Kayla Jordan, singled to left field for a 4-2 Aztec lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Pacific loaded the bases with a hit by pitch and sinlges from Santos and Anderson, setting the table for Bourne with one out, but the freshman hit into a tough luck double play to end the Pacific threat.
Pacific had a scoring chance in the sixth as Sellers and senior Alex Steinmehl started the inning with back-to-back hits, but Romero was able to keep the bats at bay in the sixth. The SDSU starter also added a perfect frame in the seventh to seal victory for the Aztecs.
For the Tigers, Anderson and Sellers each added a pair of singles while Bonnet struck out two over her seven innings of work in the circle, surrendering just two earned runs. Pacific will be back in action on Saturday to wrap up its stint at the Judi Garman Classic. The action begins at 9:30 am tomorrow with a contest against No. 9/10 Baylor before Pacific returns at 2:30 pm to face No. 2/3 Oregon.
