Box Score 2 Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Softball team (2-2) rebounded from a tough first day at the 2015 Kajikawa Classic to take both games on the second day of competition, besting Bradley 9-1 in a five-inning contest before using an outstanding start from Senior Dani Bonnet to take the second game in eight innings.
Game 1
Playing their first of 11 NCAA tournament teams from 2014, the Tigers bats came alive early against Braves starter Dani Cowan. After Tigers starter Carly Mortensen was able to work out of jams in the first two frames, the Tigers exploded for four in the second.
Freshman Sydney Lahners started the rally with a walk, senior Alex Steinmehl was hit by a pitch and Toni Santos reached on a bunt. Junior Sara Anderson then broke the scoreless tie, knocking in the first run of the season, putting the Tigers ahead 1-0. Sophomore Melanie Habib then walked with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. Freshman Molly Bourne collected her first career hit and a pair of RBIs with a ball hit to right field, extending the lead to 4-0.
After Mortensen got into a bases loaded Jam, the Tigers went to the bullpen summoning freshman Marissa Young, who was able to limit the damage to just one run for the Braves, thanks in-part to a runner-left-early call on a sacrifice fly attempt.
In the bottom of the third, Pacific plated four more runs, as Bourne collected another RBI single and Zapotoczny broke the game open with a three-run home run, the first of the year for the Orange and Black.
Young (1-1) twirled a scoreless frame in the fourth inning and the Tigers got the run they needed in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Steinmehl. The 9-1 scoreline after four set Young up to seal the Tigers run-rule victory.
Young worked around a two-out single for Bradley's Kathyrn Spenn and the Tigers picked up their first victory of the season in five innings.
Game 2
In the second game of the day, Bonnet took the ball for the second time this season, fresh off the heels of a three-hitter against Creighton in the season-opener on Friday.
Bonnet and UC Riverside starter Chelsea Ponce locked horns, swapping scoreless frames throughout regulation. Each starter was able to work around base runners, with Ponce walking four batters and the Tiger defense comitting three errors. Lahners recorded her first career hit in the fourth inning, but was thrown out attempting to stretch the drive into a double.
Ultimately, the game would head to international tie-breaker extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Pacific sophomore Toni Santos was placed at second base. Santos moved to third on a ground ball but Habib grounded out to second, giving Riverside the second out of the inning. A passed ball by Chelsey Holley allowed Santos to score, giving the Tigers the first run of the contest and a coveted 1-0 lead in extra innings.
In the bottom of the frame, Taylor Wright was placed on second for the Highlanders. Kris DeAnda laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Wright to third base but Bonnet got Jenna Curtan to ground out and Haley Harris to fly out to left field, securing the second victory of the day for the Tigers.
Bonnet matched her career-low hit total in career game, surrendering just two, matching a two-hit effort against Minnesota in 2013. So far during the 2015 campaign, the Peoria, Ariz. product has surrendered just five hits, struck out 13 batters and compiled a 1.00 ERA in 14 innings.
The Tigers will return to finish the 2015 Kajikawa Classic slate on Saturday morning at 8:15 am PT against Fordham, the reigning Atlantic 10 champions.
