Box Score 2 Tempe, Ariz. - The Pacific Softball team was stymied by Creighton pitcher Micaela Whitney in the opener of the 2015 campaign. Whitney hurled a no-hitter in her first start as a member of the Blue Jays after transferring from Iowa, striking out 11 Tiger hitters in a 2-0 victory for Creighton. Tigers' senior Dani Bonnet largely matched Whitney's effort, striking out a career-high eight batters in a three-hit effort.
The Tigers had their best scoring chance in the first inning. Junior Sara Anderson led off with a five-pitch walk and advanced to third on an illegal pitch by Whitney. Nicole Zapotoczny was hit by a pitch, setting up a first-and-third situation with one out for the Pacific. Whitney recorded strikeouts of freshman Rachel Sellers and junior Melanie Habib to finish the frame, setting the tone for the rest of her afternoon.
Bonnet's only blemish was in the 4th inning. After getting Kelsey Allender to ground out to third base, Liz Dike doubled down the left field line, setting up an opportunity with runners in scoring position for Blake Ringle, who homered to right field, giving Creighton all the cushion it would need.
Bonnet struck out the side in the 5th inning and the senior, playing in her home state of Arizona, was able to hold the Blue Jays at bay for the rest of the contest, matching Whitney pitch-for-pitch in a pitcher's duel in the Desert. It was Bonnet's lowest hit-total in a complete game since a two-hit effort against Minnesota in 2013.
The Tigers will return to action at 7:00 pm PT as the 2015 Kajikawa Classic continues with a matchup against Oregon State at the Tempe Sports Complex. Live stats for the contest will be avaliable on PacificTigers.com
