Tigers Topped By Cal Poly, No. 3/4 Alabama

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Stanford, Calif. - Competing at the Stanford Nike Invitational on Friday, the Pacific softball team dropped a pair of decisions, falling 6-0 to Cal Poly and 13-0 in five innings to No. 3/4 Alabama at the Smith Family Stadium on the Stanford campus. After the pair of losses, the Tigers record now sits at 2-6. Cal Poly improved to 4-2 with the win while Alabama moved to 8-0 on the season after blanking the Tigers.

Game One
In the first game, after Cal Poly's Lindsey Chalmers set down the Orange and Black in order, the Tigers sent Senior Dani Bonnet (1-3) to the mound to face the Mustangs. The Tiger hurler got a quick out to begin the frame, but after two batters reached on a throwing error and a hit by pitch, Ashley Tornio delivered a two-RBI double to put Cal Poly ahead 2-0. After a walk to Courtney Tyler, Sierra Hyland knocked in two more with a double for an early 4-0 lead. The next hitter Stephanie Heyward singled to center field, plating Hyland to put Cal Poly up 5-0 with just two outs in the inning.

The Tigers went to the bullpen, summoning freshman Marissa Young, who was able to get out of the jam to end the first inning of play. Young went the rest of the way for Pacific, holding the Mustangs scoreless for five innings and recording two strikeouts before allowing a Ceccacci double that gave an insurance run to Cal Poly.

The Tigers had scoring opportunities in the fourth and sixth innings that went fruitless. In the fourth with one out, junior Nicole Zapotoczny singled through the left side and Sydney Lahners poked a single into left field, but Chalmers struck out sophomore Cassidy Gustafson and senior Alex Steinmehl swinging to end the threat. n the sixth, after Sierra Hyland moved from designated player to the circle, the Tigers loaded the bases, thanks in part to a single by freshman Molly Bourne and a pair of walks. Hyland struck out Gustafson and got Steinmehl to line out to right field to end the frame.

Hyland walked a pair both juniors Sara Anderson and Melanie Habib in the final inning, but was able to work out of trouble, striking out Bourne to finish the ballgame.

Game Two
In the second game of the day, the Tigers faced No. 3/4 Alabama (8-0), the defending Women's College World Series runner-ups from a year ago.

Pacific starter freshman Megan Walters recorded two strikeouts in the first inning, but surrendered three runs as Chaunsey Bell and Leona Lafaele hit back-to-back doubles to make it 3-0 in favor of the Crimson Tide early in the contest.

Anderson started the bottom half of the frame with a single up the middle, and Habib delivered a hard strike to shortstop, but Alabama turned a double-play to end hopes of a Tiger rally in the first.  Alabama added two more in the second inning and Crimson Tide starter Sydney Littlejohn worked around a walk in the bottom of the frame.  In the third, Walters threw a perfect frame and Anderson picked up her second hit of the ballgame in the bottom of the inning.

Alabama broke the game open with four-run frames in the fourth and fifth innings to extend the lead to 13-0 in favor of the Crimson Tide and Littlejohn struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth to send Alabama to a victory in its first game of the weekend.

The Tigers will return to action at the 2015 Stanford Nike Invitational on Saturday at 3:00 pm against Cal Poly and 5:30 pm against Stanford. Live stats for both games and audio for the Stanford contest will be available via PacificTigers.com
