Tigers Fall In Season Finale At Long Beach State

Box Score

Long Beach, Calif. - Playing their final match of the 2015 season, the Pacific volleyball team dropped a 3-0 contest to Long Beach State on Friday night to close out the season. The Tigers ended their season campaign at 17-13 overall while the 49ers improved to 24-6 on the year with one match to play.

Set scores for the match were: 26-24, 25-20, 25-21.

Falling behind quickly at the Pyramid, the Tigers found themselves chasing the 49ers throughout the first frame as they fell behind by seven late in the set at 20-13. Despite the deficit, the Tigers were able to fight their way back into the set as Pacific went on a 9-2 run with senior Mia Feiner behind the service line as the fourth-year Tiger playing her final match served the 49ers out of system and into mistakes allowing Pacific to capitalize. With the ball on their side, the Tigers went to sophomore Maycie LaBass who came up with two of her four kills while junior Alicja Wilk came up with a pair of blocks to get Pacific back into the set. The run would give the Tigers a chance to steal away the set as Pacific took its first lead of the frame at 24-23 on a kill from sophomore Alex Holt, but the comeback was not to be as the 49ers rolled off three-straight points to fend off the Tigers' set-point opportunity before taking the contest and the early lead.

Down one, the Tigers played tight with the 49ers throughout the first half of the second set as junior Lexi Elman shook off a rough first set to get going in the second. Even though the Tigers were able to spread the ball around and improve their offense from the first set, the 49ers were able to do the same as Long Beach State pulled away late, turning a one-point lead at 16-15 into a five-point win thanks to a 5-1 run that was kicked off with a block from Nele Barber and Haley Benson.

In the third, Pacific again had a chance to get into the match as the Tigers stormed out of the lockerroom to take the early 10-4 lead. Pacific used its serve to stifle the 49ers offense while scoring points itself as sophomore Maycie LaBass tallied three service aces during a seven point span for Pacific. However, just as quickly as Pacific built its lead the 49ers erased it using and 8-2 run that knottted the set at 12-12. From there, the two teams traded points until a Tiger attack error opened the door for the 49ers to create separation. Long Beach State would close the night winning four of the final five points to seal the set win and with it, the match win.

Overall, the Tigers were led by LaBass for the second-straight match as the sophomore came up with a match-high 12 kills to go with her three aces and five digs. Wilk finished the night with 10 kills on .348 hitting while Elman would end with just eight kills but also 18 digs. With her second dig of the night, Elman joined the 1,000 dig club as she finished the season at 1,016 in three seasons.

Ending her career, senior Kimmy Whitson finished her final match with six kills to go with 31 assists, five digs and two blocks. Feiner ended with four digs while senior Holland Crenshaw tallied three kills and one block in her final collegiate contest.

For the 49ers, just Barber hit double-figures in kills with 11 on 30 attacks to go with 13 digs for the double-double. As a team, Long Beach State outhit the Tigers, .255-to-.207 with both teams recording 45 digs.
