Pacific was forced to battle through the final 29 minutes of action with 10 players after Alex Hussar was issued a red card in the 61st minute of play. In defeat, Pacific falls to 3-12-1 (2-6 WCC) while Santa Clara improves to 12-5-2 (5-1-2 WCC) after the win in Stockton.
The early part of the match was characterized by a flurry of goals. The 5th minute blast would provide just a brief lead for the Broncos. In the 11th minute, Alex Hussar scooped up a turnover just outside the penalty area. Pacific's leading goal-scorer slotted the ball towards the left side of the box, where Somers was waiting near the far post to punch in the equalizer.
Somers, a Carmel, Ind. native, capped her home career with her first goal since Sept. 20th of 2012 against Saint Mary's, chipping in to a 3-2 overtime non-conference win over the Gaels as Pacific was in the midst of the Big West conference at the time.
The early goal parade was not over, as Santa Clara responded in the 14th minute to take a 2-1 advantage. Mariana Galvan played the ball into the box and delivered a quick, two-touch pass to Julie Vass, who finished past Perry for the lead.At the halftime break, Perry had five saves to her credit while Pacific was out-cornered 6-0 and outshot 14-2.
Santa Clara added a third goal in the 56th minute as Jordan Jesolva fired towards goal and saw her ball deflected off of Perry and into the foot of Vass, who recorded her second score of the game and sixth of the season.
In the 61st minute, Hussar was sent off after a red card, leaving Pacific down a player for the remainder of the contest. The Tigers made a goalkeeper switch in the 62nd minute, giving freshman Regan Heslop experience against a talented Broncos team for the remainder of the c ontest.
Somers said of her Senior Day goal post-game, "It was a great time for it to happen, of course. I was super excited and the team was super excited as well. Shayda and I are both extremely proud of this team and we can't wait to to see where this team can go from here."
Head Coach Keith Coleman noted, "It was a really great moment and the bench went nuts. I'm really happy for Cheyenne, she has battled through a lot to be able to play today. One of her preseason goals was to school a goal on Senior Day, so that was a really cool way to reach her goal against a great team."
He continued, "As a team, we've talked about championship characteristics. The first thing we talked about was how we have to learn how to battle and stay in a game. I think this team showed we can do it against one of the best teams in the country."
The Tigers will wrap up the 2015 regular season with a road match against San Diego on Friday, November 6th at 7:30 pm. The match will be streamed via TheW.tv and live stats are available via PacificTigers.com.
