Box Score Moraga, Calif. - In a dramatic, hard-fought battle at Saint Mary's Stadium in Moraga, the Pacific women's soccer team clawed its way to a 2-1 victory in sudden victory overtime, with Alex Hussar connecting on a 109th minute strike to send the Tigers into a frenzy and hand the Orange and Black a key road victory. The Tigers improve to 3-10-1 on the season with the win (2-4 WCC), while Saint Mary's falls to 7-7-3 on the season (2-3-1 WCC).
The first 45 minutes of action saw the teams locked in a scoreless battle, with Pacific trailing in shots 10-6. Lena Perry made three saves in the first period. The Tigers' Mati Long had a pair of shots on goal in the first 16 minutes and change of action, setting the tone for what turned out to be an exceptional all-around performance.
After the halftime intermission, both sides ramped up the offensive intensity. Lena Perry was able to deal with the challenges from the Gaels, stopping a 58th minute attempt by Samantha Dion, who along with teammate Kiana Quarles, had eight shots on the contest.
Pacific found its rhythm in the 60th minute, as Hannah Stammer had a strong attempt on goal that was denied by Gaels keeper Julia McDonald. Ashley Arnett followed with a shot that was punched out of play by McDonald for a corner kick. In the 68th minute, Pacific scored its most dramatic goal of the season to date. Alex Hussar scooped up an errant SMC pass at midfield, dribbled to 35 yards away from the goal and fired a shot from the right side of the field. The attempt sailed into the net, past a diving attempt in vain by McDonald. The highlight real connection gave Pacific a 1-0 lead as Hussar picked up her third of the season.
The theatrics were far from over, however, as the Gaels stuck in the 89th minute with an equalizer from Samantha Dion, who took a cross from Hannah Diaz and hammered it home to send the match into overtime.
The first overtime period was highlighted by an exceptional save from Perry, who denied Quarles a potential game-winner, laying out to preserve the tie. The game seemed destined for a draw in the final minutes of overtime, with neither team having a strong scoring chance.
Fate changed for the Tigers, however, after Saint Mary's committed a foul with two minutes remaining. Bianca Lopez drew the foul, setting up a free kick around midfield with 90 seconds to play. The attempt found the waiting arms of McDonald, who was unable to fully corral the attempt, leaving the ball dangerously free in front of the goalmouth. The loose ball in front of the goal found the head of Julia Beck. Beck's astute header pass found the waiting boot of Hussar, who slotted it home to send Pacific to the walk-off victory on the road, propeling the Orange and Black contingent into celebration.
Hussar became the first Pacific player since Brittni Beeman to find the back of the net twice in a contest. Beeman scored twice on her senior night as Pacific picked up a 3-2 win on November 1st of 2013. Perry continued her outstanding work between the pipes, picking up seven saves in the win.
Head Coach Keith Coleman was elated with his team's gritty victory on Saturday, saying following the contest, "Victory belongs to this who believe in it the most. The team battled through the adversity of giving up a late equalizer and found the inter strength to get this tough road win. This group is growing everyday and I couldn't be more proud."
The Tigers return to action to wrap up the home slate next weekend. Pacific will participate in a pair of doubleheaders with the men's team. The Tigers first take on San Francisco at 5:00 pm on Friday, October 30th before a 2:30 pm contest on Sunday, November 1st, which is Senior Day at Knoles Field. Pacific will honor Shayda Ansari and Cheyenne Somers for their contributions to the Pacific program.
