San Jose, Calif. - The Pacific women's water polo team rolled over Cal State Monterey Bay and pushed Brazil to sudden death in an exhibition on Sunday at the LouStrong Memorial Tournament in San Jose.
The Tigers posted a 13-4 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the early afternoon as Aelish Guinn and Rachel Krieger posted hat tricks. Taylor Adair and Anna Kertes each scored twice. Ellen Tiedemann, Kelsey Carter and Crystal Villanueva added goals as well.
Michele Relton posted eight saves in three quarters, while Alexis Hollinrake made her Pacific debut with a four-save fourth quarter.
Pacific improved to 1-2 on the year, while CSMB fell to 0-3.
In the late afternoon, the Tigers faced the Brazil National Team, which had finished 14th at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships.
The Tigers rallied back from down 8-6 with three minutes to go to force overtime, but the Brazilians escaped with a sudden death overtime win on a goal from Amanda Oliviera with 18 seconds left in the first sudden death extra session.
Relton posted 14 saves in goal against Brazil. Kertes posted five goals, while Karolina Hlavata added a pair of goals and Adair chipped in one, including the game-tying goal in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Kertes scored both first-quarter goals for Pacific, but the Tigers trailed the Brazilians 4-2 after one period. Kertes and Hlavata tallied in the second to narrow the gap to 5-4 at halftime. Kertes and Marina Canetti traded goals in the third quarter.
In the fourth, Kertes tied the game at 6-6 before Marina Zablith and Oliviera posted back-to-back goals for Brazil.
Kertes tallied with 2:59 to go to bring Pacific within one, and following a Brazilian exclusion, Adair converted with the advantage to knot the game at 8-8.
The Tigers held Brazil off the scoreboard until Oliviera finished gave Brazil a sudden victory.
Pacific is back in action on February 7, at home against Cal at 6 p.m.
