Box Score Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 to San Jose State on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Knoles Soccer Field. The Tigers fell to 2-4-0, while the Spartans improved to 2-3-0.
"We were playing from behind from the beginning and just couldn't dig out of the hole," said Head Coach Keith Coleman. "We had a lot of looks at the goal, but we need to do a better job of finishing plays."
The Spartans struck early, as a cross by Gabriella Stange drifted into the Tiger goal over the out-stretched hands of goalkeeper Jacqueline Kane just 18 seconds into the match. San Jose State made it 2-0 when a ball passed back to Kane was mishandled and tapped in by Isela Rivera at the 11:59 mark. Pacific out-shot the Spartans 7-6 in the opening 45 minutes, with the best scoring opportunity coming from the foot of Ebony Ezeji. She blasted a shot that was blocked by a field player, then followed up with a shot that was just high.
Though the Tigers again held an edge in shots in the second half, they were unable to find the back of the net. Pacific had a 7-4 edge in second half shots and 14-10 for the match, but the Spartans scored two goals. Alexis Venegas scored on a header at the 68:02 mark after a corner kick by Stange. The Spartans scored their final goal when Karelli Rodriguez scored after a through ball by Carley McBeath at 72:53.
The Tigers are next in action with a road game at USC on Friday, Sept. 12.
