Baseball Topped By Gonzaga at Pacific Baseball Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers fell to Gonzaga, 9-8, Saturday in the Pacific Baseball Invitational, with the Bulldogs posting the last of seven lead changes in the ballgame. Senior SS Dustin Torchio was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI

Senior 2B Tyger Pederson also drove in two runs, while sophomore CF Tyler Sullivan turned in a 3-for-4 night with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Freshman 3B J.J. Wagner added in a double and a single in three at-bats, scoring a pair of runs.

Gonzaga rallied from down 6-2 to tie the game at 7-7 before Pacific surged ahead in the bottom of the eighth, but the Bulldogs struck for two in the ninth for the win.

Senior LHP John Haberman struck out six in five innings, with two earned runs allowed and departed in line for the win before settling for the no decision.

The Tigers fall to 2-4 on the year while Gonzaga moves to 4-3 on the young season.

Pacific opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Dustin Torchio walked and Erik Lockwood was hit by pitch with two out. Tyger Pederson followed with an RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.

Gonzaga answered with two in the third inning, as Alex Bonczyk singled, Mike Gunsolus walked and Steven Halcomb singled through the middle. Chad Eslick followed with a double to left to put the Bulldogs on top.

Pacific responded in kind, with three in the third, as Brett Sullivan reached on an error, Tyler Sullivan singled to first and Torchio picked up an RBI single to left. Robby Mansfield loaded the bases by beating out a sacrifice attempt for an infield single. Pederson then walked for the go-ahead run. Jacob Goulder brought home Torchio with an RBI groundout for a 4-2 Pacific lead.

The Tigers tacked on two in the fourth, as J.J. Wagner doubled to left center, chasing Gonzaga starter Andrew Sopko. Brett Sullivan greeted RHP Billy Moon with a single to center. Moon tried to pick off Sullivan, but his throw to first went awry allowing Wagner to trot home. Tyler Sullivan then doubled in his brother for a 6-2 Pacific lead.

Haberman departed after five innings, and the Bulldogs started to chip away at the lead. Cory LeBrun singled through the right side and Cabe Reiten added a single off sophomore RHP Mike Hager, before Hager picked up a pair of outs on the infield. But Halcomb drove home two with a single up the middle.

Senior LHP Travis Lumby was summoned from the pen and coaxed an inning-ending groundout.

The Tigers picked up a run back in the bottom of the sixth, as Wagner singled to right and after a sacrifice by Tyler Sullivan, Torchio ripped a double to left center for a 7-4 Pacific lead.

Gonzaga rallied for three in the seventh, as Zach Abruzza reached on error and Marco Gonzales singled. After a Travis Forbes single, LeBrun doubled home a pair of runs.

Freshman RHP Kevin Hammann entered and struck out Reiten, but PH Brock Slavin brought home the tying run with an RBI groundout. Hammann tossed 1.1 innings, leaving in the eighth when RHP Bryce Lombardi entered to end a threat.

Pacific took the lead again in the eighth, as C Jason Taasaas singled to left and was sacrificed to second. After a walk to Brett Sullivan, Tyler Sullivan singled to second, with Taasaas coming in when the throw skipped past the first baseman. Gonzaga RHP David Bigelow posted the final out of the eighth.

LeBrun singled top open the ninth, advanced to second on a failed pickoff, and went to third on a sacrifice. PH Payden Cawley Lamb knotted the game at 8-8 with a sacrifice fly. An after Gunsolus walked and stole second, Halcomb put the Bulldogs up 9-8 with a double to center before Lombardi got out of the inning with a fly out.

Pederson opened the ninth with a leadoff walk, and after a sacrifice bunt, RHP Michael Rucker got a pair of groundouts to strand the tying run at third and pick up his second save.

Bigelow picked up the win, with his third of an inning pitched. Lombardi was tabbed with the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year.

The Tigers and Bulldogs wrap the Pacific Baseball Invitational Sunday at noon.
