Albuquerque, N.M. - Today was a test of the Tigers' patience and strategy. However the Tigers competed with tact and a great deal of heart. With this confidence and drive to succeed the Tigers dominated in all three of the doubles competitions earning the first possible point of the match. While all the doubles matches were fairly close, the longest match featured sophomore Iveta Masarova and freshman Hana Ritterova in which they defeated Bezdickova and Richardson 9-8 (7-3).
In the singles competitions, the Tigers continued with their momentum by securing the No. 2 and 4 position and finally claiming the overall match win in the No. 5 position. The victories in the No. 2 and No. 4 position were won in cool straight sets, while No. 5 Gergana Boncheva faced an uphill battle of a three set match. After having dropped the first set, Gergana came back and won the next two against Laura Richardson with confidence to post a final match score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
At the conclusion of the match, Head Women's Tennis Coach Charlotte Scatliffe stated, "Today was exactly what college tennis is all about. The Tigers went into the doubles with the most spirit I've seen to date. After coming away from all 3 doubles matches with wins across the board I knew the Lobos would come out with extra purpose in the singles. Although the Lobos did, it was not enough as the match came down to 3-3 with Gergana Boncheva on court to break the tie. Gergana's 3rd set was the highlight as she played with incrediable confidence, heart and Tiger spirit."
The Tigers are now preparing for the match against University of Texas at El Paso.
