Los Angeles, Calif. - The Pacific Men's Water Polo team, ranked third in the country, led No. 2 UCLA 9-8 heading into the final quarter, but the Bruins rallied for a 12-10 MPSF win Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Center.
Kevin Oliviera tallied three times for Pacific, which falls to 15-3 on the year, and 2-1 in MPSF play. UCLA moves to 21-2 overall, 2-1 in MPSF action.
Oliveira opened the scoring for a 1-0 lead 1:15 into the match, but UCLA tied it up before senior Balasz Erdelyi gave the Tigers the lead. Senior Goran Tomasevic added his lone tally of the game as Pacific led 3-2 after one.
In the second quarter, after UCLA knotted the game at 3-3, Pacific reeled off three-straight goals, as Oliveira posted a pair of scores and Aleksandar Petrovic gave Pacific a 6-3 advantage. Casey Fleming put Pacific up 7-4, but the Bruins countered to cut the margin to 7-5 at halftime.
Junior Alex Obert gave Pacific an 8-6 lead with 3:55 left in the third, and Erdelyi's second goal of the game with 46 seconds left in the quarter provided a 9-7 advantage.
But UCLA's Cristiano Mirarchi pulled the Bruins within one, and 37 seconds into the fourth quarter, he struck again to tie the game at 9-9. Chris Wendt gave UCLA its first lead of the game, with 5:44 remaining and Mirarchi's second goal of the quarter put the Bruins up 11-9.
Ben Stevensen cut the margin to one, as he tallied with 3:43 remaining, and Pacific got the stop on defense. But Bruins goalkeeper Garrett Danner made one of his three fourth-quarter saves and Danny McClintick added an insurance goal.
Danner and the Bruins defense fended off a Pacific power play with 1:29 to go and UCLA ran out the clock.
Pacific goalkeeper Alex Malkis made eight saves in net for the Tigers, while Danner finished with five saves.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 2, at home when Pacific takes on No. 1 USC at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
