Tokyo, Japan - Playing at the Tanagura Country Club in Tokyo, Japan, the Pacific golf team opened the 2012-13 season at the Topy Cup on Tuesday, Sept. 11. The Tigers finished first round play in a tie for eighth place as Pacific posted a +10, 290 through 18 holes. The leaders in the clubhouse after day one were a pair of Japanese universities as Tohoku Fukushi and Osaka Gakuin each posted -7, 273 scores for the first round of play.
Individually, the Tigers' lone upperclassmen led the way on day one as senior Alex Edfort tallied a -1, 69 to open his tournament. At -1, Edfort is tied for 11th place overall and just three strokes off the lead pace which sits at -4. Both Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen of Baylor and Shingo Ito of Osaka Gakuin carded the low round for the opening day.
Just behind Edfort was sophomore Eric Sugimoto as the second-year player carded a +2, 72 to put himself into a tie for 27th. In his first collegiate tournament, freshman Austin Weatherholt finished his opening round one stroke behind Sugimoto as the San Jose, Calif. native went three-over with a 73.
The Tigers will make a push to get back into contention on day two of the tournament which tees off on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
