Colorado State Rallies Past Pacific Softball

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Colorado State plated four runs in the seventh to come from behind and take a make-up game from the Pacific softball team, 6-5, Thursday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field. Senior SS Nicole Matson doubled and drove in two, but a three-run homer from CSU 1B Alysa Greckel capped the Rams rally.

Junior CF Megan Hom posted three hits in four at bats with a triple and two runs scored, while junior P/1B Nikki Armagost turned in a pair of hits, a double and a run scored at the plate.

The Tigers tallied three runs in the first, as Hom reached on error and sophomore 1B/DP Kelsey Rodriguez walked to open the inning. With one out, Matson doubled to center scoring the Hom. The throw to the plate bounced to the backstop, allowing Rodriguez to trot home and Matson to reach third. Junior C Amy Moore followed with a grounder to first to plate the third run before CSU RHP Kacie McCarthy escaped further damage.

Armagost pitched into the seventh, allowing a pair of runs in the fourth on a single by Greckel and a two-run homer to right by C Emily Pohl. Pohl's second homer of the year cut the Tigers lead to 3-2 after four.

Pacific earned a run back in the fifth, as Hom singled to short and Rodriguez walked with one out. After a bunt single by Armagost, Matson's sacrifice fly to right gave Pacific a 4-2 advantage.

Armagost departed after issuing a leadoff walk to Danielle Wikre in the seventh, and sophomore RHP Tori Shepard struck out the first batter she faced before walking RF Lyssa Roberts. CF Shae Rodriguez poked a seeing-eye single through the middle to cut the Tiger lead in half at 4-3. Shepard struck out SS Ashlie Ortega before facing Greckel with two away.

Shepard fell behind in the count 3-0 before working the count back to full. After four straight foul balls, Greckel turned on the ninth pitch of the at-bat for a three-run home run over the left field wall to give the Rams a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Hom dropped a bunt single in front of the plate, and after a fielder's choice, Armagost sent one deep to the warning track in left for a double. Matson was hit by pitch to load the bases with one away.  The Rams picked up the second out at the plate on a fielder's choice to third base before sophomore LF Megan Fogelsong walked on a 3-2 count to pull Pacific within one. With the bases still full of Tigers, McCarthy coaxed a ground out to third to end the ballgame.

McCarthy allowed seven hits in seven innings with two of the five runs earned. She struck out a pair of batters while earning the win (7-5). Armagost struck out four in six innings, allowing seven hits and was charged with three earned runs. Three earned went on the tab of Shepard, who falls to 4-4 on the season. All three outs she recorded were via strikeout.

Pacific falls to 14-10 on the season, while Colorado State improves to 11-15.

The Tigers will be back in action next Thursday, March 22, as Pacific opens the Libby Matson Tournament at 6 p.m. against Princeton. The tournament will continue with three games next Friday, with Pacific playing the 4:30 p.m. nightcap against San Diego State. Three more games follow on Saturday, with the Tigers facing Princeton at 2:30 pm. The Tigers will wrap the tournament with a pair of games on Sunday against Saint Mary's, starting at noon.
