Stockton, Calif. –
In Game 14 of the NorCal Tournament, Pacific returned to Chris Kjeldsen Pool in what would be a physical and defensive matchup against No. 4 Stanford.
The Cardinal wasted little time taking the 2-0 lead on consecutive goals from Forrest Watkins and Ryan Kent to start the game. Tom Koning tied the game at two all with a pair of goals in a 26 second span.
Pacific's offensive momentum carried over into the second quarter as Goran Tomasevic tallied his first goal of the contest at the 7:41 spot to put the Tigers up 3-2. Stanford closed out the first half with the equalizer at the 5:25 spot for a 3-3 score heading into half.
Stanford regained the one point advantage at the 6:48 spot to start the third before Balazs Erdelyi found the back of the net 13 seconds later to tie the game at four all. Despite allowing the Cardinal to take the one point advantage for the second time in the quarter, Pacific's offense took advantage of a 6-on-5 man up situation with a goal from Daniel Lungu to tie the game at 5-5. Stanford's offense continued to gain momentum in the quarter tallying goals at the 3:56 and 2:15 spots, but Pacific's scoring attack did not let up as Koning and Tomasevic once again found the back of the cage for a 7-7 score heading into the final frame of regulation.
At the start of the fourth Travis Noll notched his second goal of the contest to put the Cardinal up 8-7. After battling for nearly five minutes Pacific came up with the equalizer goal at the 2:25 when Jason Wensley found Lance Morrison center cage, sending the game into overtime.
In the first three minute overtime period, Stanford was able to take the lead with 1:01 left on the clock on a goal from Watkins. Pacific's offense came up short being held scoreless during the six minutes of extended play, and fell 9-8 to Stanford at the end of double overtime.
With the loss the Tigers fell to 4-1 on the season, while the Cardinal improved to 3-0 on the year. Pacific returns to Chris Kjeldsen Pool for semi-final action on Sunday, September 18, 2011, at 8 a.m. to take on No. 6 UC Irvine. Stanford will face No. 1 USC at 10:40 am at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
