Second-Half Comeback Falls Short Against USC

Box Score

San Diego, Calif. – The Pacific women's soccer team put on a furious comeback attempt late in the second half, but two early goals by Southern Cal was enough for the Trojans to hold on to a 2-1 win Sunday at the USD Tournament.

Senior forward Angelica Figuera's penalty kick goal cut the margin in half in the 89th minute, but time ran out on the Tigers as they fall to 1-3-0 on the season. USC, which began the year ranked No. 25 and is now receiving votes, picks up its first win of the season to improve to 1-3-0.

The Tigers out-shot USC 8-3 in the second half, and 11-8 for the match, but the Trojans posted a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.

Just 3:31 into the match, USC's Elizabeth Eddy finished a cross from Ashley Freyer for an early 1-0 lead and Eddy's first goal of the season

At the 5:17 mark, the Trojans were awarded a penalty kick and Brittany Kerridge converted for a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers couldn't get on the board in the first half, as their three shots failed to find the frame. USC totaled five shots, three on goal, on the first half.

Pacific tried to play catch-up in the second half, but Alex Topp's shot in the 69th minute sailed high, and Kristina Wavomba's shot in the 72nd minute was saved by USC keeper Shelby Church.

With the Tigers pushing forward, USC countered with an attack, but keeper Tashia Long made the save on Morgan Morrow's shot to keep Pacific in the match.

The Tigers mounted the offensive, but Pernille Shulze-Larsen missed high in the 76th minute and then put a shot of frame in the 78th minute, but Church was again up to the challenge.

Off a corner kick in the 83rd minute, Kortney Agdeppa's shot missed high and Church denied a shot by Laura Hogan in the 86th minute.

The Tigers finally broke through in the 89th minute, with 1:51 left, a foul in the box led to a penalty kick for Angelica Figueroa, who buried it for her first of the year.

But the Tigers ran out of time, dropping their third game this season to teams ranked or receiving votes.

Pacific will visit Sacramento State on Friday, Sept. 2, for a 5 p.m. match before returning home to host UNLV on Sept. 9 and Cal State Bakersfield on Sept. 11.
