Tigers Split First Day of Judy Garman Classic, Downing Bowling Green 14-2 (5), Falling to Nebraska 2-1

Fullerton, Calif - The Pacific Tigers just missed a sweep of the first day of action at the Judy Garman Classic, blasting Bowling Green 14-2, before losing a tough matchup with Nebraska, 2-1, on Thursday, Mar. 12.

Following Thursday's contest, the Tigers are 10-10 on the season.

Pacific 14, Bowling Green 2

Pacific delivered an offensive explosion in the first contest of the day, scoring six runs in the third and eight runs in the fourth inning to earn a 14-2 run decision over Bowling Green.

Sophomore Nicole Matson (Castaic, Calif.) got the Tigers rolling in the bottom of the third, blasting a two-run double to the center field wall. Pacific went on to tack on four more runs in the inning on four hits, a walk, a hit batter and a Falcons error.

The Pacific hit parade continued to turn in the fourth inning as the Tigers plated eight runs on five singles, three walks, a hit batter and a Bowling Green error. Freshman Paige Emerson (Rocklin, Calif.) had both of her RBI in the inning, one coming in separate at-bats.

Pacific senior Kelsey Engle (Folsom, Calif.) evened her record at 5-5 with the victory, allowing two runs (zero earned) on four hits and two walks in four innings.

Bowling Green's Melissa Bott (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on eight hits and a walk in one inning.

Nebraska 2, Pacific 1

The second game was a game the Tigers just missed as Pacific outhit Nebraska 8-4, but couldn't get things to fall into place when needed.

Nebraska took the early lead in the top of the second inning as the Cornhuskers took advantage of two Pacific errors to take a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the third as senior Casey Goldsand (Scottsdale, Ariz.) skewed a ball just over first base then scampered into second base with a double. The next batter, Emerson laced a shot up the middle that nailed the second base bag and ricocheted toward third, allowing Goldsand to score and giving Emerson a double.

Unfortunately Nebraska tallied the final run of the game on a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning by Brittany Pascale.

The Tigers had a chance in the bottom of the sixth, but freshman Amanda Collier (Sparks, Nev.) was throw out at the plate from second on a single to center field from junior Karie Wilson (Glendale, Ariz.)

Pacific senior Heidi Helberg (Brentwood, Calif.) suffered the loss (4-3) as she allowed two runs (one earned) one four hits and three walks in seven innings.

Nebraska's Molly Hill (7-2) came on in relief to nab the win, tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Pacific returns to the diamond on Friday, Mar. 13 as the Tigers take on Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. on the second day of action at the Judy Garman Classic.
