Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of Tennessee-Martin on Sunday, September 14, at home in the final game of their own Pacific Fall Invitational. The loss dropped the Tigers to 3-4-0 on the season while the Skyhawks improved to 4-2-1. All four teams at the tournament (Hawai'i and USF played earlier in the day) finished the weekend at 1-1.
In a slow it down, drag it out contest that saw the Skyhawks control the pace and style of the game while the Tigers controlled the stat column, Pacific found itself on the wrong end of a second half free kick that would decide the outcome of the game. Awarded a free kick off a Tiger foul just inside of their offensive third, the Skyhawks took advantage of the opportunity presented to them to setup the only score of the contest off of the set piece.
Stephanie Nilica took the free kick and found her teammate Brooke Robertson running free in the center of the penalty area. After receiving the pass, Robertson made her only shot of the contest count, slotting home the first and only goal of the game at the 64:21 mark in the contest. In all, the Skyhawks managed just four shots in the game while Pacific's offense posted 12, with eight coming in the final 45 minutes.
Senior Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) tallied five shots on the day with four on frame to lead the Tigers' attack, however Johanna Rathbun, Tennessee-Martin's goalkeeper, produced six saves throughout the afternoon.
Pacific had its chances throughout the day with six corner kicks to the Skyhawks' one. 30 fouls were whistled throughout the contest with 16 going against the visiting Skyhawks and 14 against the Tigers. Additionally, four yellow cards were issued in the game.
Prior to Pacific's game, Hawai'i defeated San Francisco, 5-0, to pick up its first win of the tournament.
The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, September 19, when they host Iona at Stagg Memorial Stadium. The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
