Own Goal Downs Pacific In The Desert

Aug. 30, 2008

Box Score

Las Vegas, Nev. - Playing their first of two games in the desert of Las Vegas, Nev., the Pacific soccer team came up just short of pinning the first loss of the season of the Rebels of UNLV, falling 1-0 on Saturday, August 30. The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-2-0 on the season while the Rebels improved to 3-0-1 on the year.

Playing even throughout the entire afternoon, the Tigers were on the wrong end of fortune against the Rebels late in the second half, giving UNLV the only score of the contest in the 79th minute of play. With the ball deep along the Tigers' end line, UNLV was able to play a cross into the middle that was inadvertently knocked into the Tigers' own net on an attempted clearance.

Despite the unfortunate turn of play against them, the Tigers played well throughout the day, holding even with the defending Mountain West champions despite the heavy heat of the desert. Overall, the Rebels posted a 10-to-6 shooting advantage on the Tigers, but redshirt freshman Amanda McNab (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) was able to post three saves in net for Pacific to keep the Tigers in the game.

Pacific had its chances throughout the contest to get on the scoreboard, but were unable to scratch into the scorebook. Freshman Laura Hogan (Poway, Calif.) had one of the Tigers' best shots of the game early in the first half, blasting a shot from the top of the box just inches wide of the far post. McNab's counterpart, Alicia Lugo, came up with three saves in the contest for UNLV to keep Pacific from scoring.

UNLV's late goal was the first goal scored between the two teams in two contests after a 0-0 draw in 2007.

Pacific will be back in action on Sunday, August 31, as they take on the Wolf Pack of Nevada to close out play in Las Vegas. The game is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
