Stockton, Calif. - Behind a second half strike from senior Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) the Pacific soccer team took home a 1-0 shutout win over Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday, August 17, in exhibition play. The contest was the lone exhibition game for the Tigers in 2008.
In front of their home crowd for the first time in 2008, the Tigers did not disappoint their fans, outplaying their cross town foe for an exhibition victory in their one and only tune up game of the new season.
After a slow start in the first half that put both teams in the halftime locker room knotted at 0-0, the Tigers came out running in the second half, putting themselves into prime scoring positions throughout the entire final 45 minutes. Outshooting the Warriors 11-3 in the second half, and 19-4 for the entire game, the Tigers finally struck pay dirt in the 69th minute of play when King found the back of the net for the lone goal of the contest.
With the ball played out wide, King wiggled her way into scoring position in the middle of the Warriors' 18 to setup the scoreboard tally. With the ball low in the right corner of the field, freshman Kristina Wavomba (Encinitas, Calif.) slotted a ball through the heart of the Warriors' defense, right to the feet of King. With the ball at her feet and her back towards goal, King spun and fired a shot low to the far post, beating Millie Brown, Cal State Stanislaus' 'keeper, putting the Tigers ahead for good with 21:11 remaining to play in the game.
Staked with a one goal lead, the Tigers' defense upped their pressure of the Warriors' to hold off a late comeback attack. Redshirt sophomore Jill Medigovich (San Diego, Calif.), seeing her first live action for the Tigers since transferring to Pacific, posted two saves in the half after coming into the game in relief of redshirt freshman Amanda McNab (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) who started the game in goal for the Tigers.
The Tigers will start regular season action on Friday, August 22, when they host northern California rival, Sacramento State at Stagg Memorial Stadium. The season is scheduled to kick-off at 7:00 pm.
