Box Score Game Two

Fresno, Calif. - The Pacific softball team dropped both contests to Fresno State as the two teams opened the 2008 season with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 9. Fresno State defeated the Tigers, 5-1 in the opener and outlasted Pacific, 3-2 in the second contest.

Pacific is now 0-2 on the season, while Fresno State is 2-0.

Game One

The Tigers opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as sophomore Kellee Wilson (Tracy, Calif.) laced a single to left field. Junior Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Karie Wilson (Glendale, Ariz.), then sacrificed both runners over to second and third. With two outs in the inning, sophomore Brittany Hendrickson (San Jose, Calif.) singled up the middle to plate Wilson and lift Pacific to a 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately, that was all the offense the Tigers could muster as Pacific was limited to one hit the rest of the contest.

Fresno State, meanwhile, tied the game with a solo home run from Jenna Cervantez in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs took the lead on an RBI single from Caitlin Stiglich in the fourth and tacked on three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Pacific junior Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) suffered the loss (0-1) as she allowed five runs (two earned) on 12 hits and one walk. Engle notched four strikeouts.

Fresno State's Morgan Melloh (1-0) earned the victory as she held Pacific to one run on three hits and two walks, while recording 13 strikeouts.

Game Two

The Tigers scored first again in the nightcap as Pacific senior Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) blasted her first home run of the season over the left field wall.

Fresno State came right back at the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs on a walk, a triple and two errors.

The Bulldogs added an insurance run on a single and a two-base error in the sixth, but the Tigers showed more than a little fight in their final at-bat.

The Tigers' rally got going with two outs in the seventh as Santos drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Senior Mandy Hickman (Phoenix, Ariz.) delivered a pinch-hit single to left. Santos scampered to third on the play and Hickman took second on the throw to third. The Tigers sent in senior Lauren Sandelin (Sedro=Woolley, Wash.) to pinch-run for Hickman. Junior Casey Goldsand (Scottsdale, Ariz.) followed with a single into left that plated Santos, but Sandelin was gunned down at the plate to end the game.

Pacific junior Heidi Helberg (Brentwood, Calif.) suffered a tough luck loss as she allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk.

Mellow notched her second win of the afternoon (2-0), allowing one run on three hits and two walks in three innings of relief.

The Tigers open their home schedule, tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 10 as Pacific hosts Saint Mary's in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
