Box Score
Stanford Calif. Behind a dominant outing by Junior Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.), now 2-2 in the 2008 season, Pacific picks up a 4-0 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos Sunday February 17, lifting them to 3-6 on the year.
A pitchers dual was the story for most of the contest despite a few hiccups and missed opportunities by both teams. Senior Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) put the Tigers ahead in the first inning with a solo homerun to left center on the first pitch of her first at bat.
Jorgenson finished the day 2 for 3 while scoring a run and an RBI. Junior Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) finished the day 2 for 3 as well.
One run was all the tigers would have needed but in the sixth the Tigers would take advantage of a Weyman leadoff single that kick started the Tigers rally. With three walks issued and Senior Mandy Hickman (Phoenix, Arizona) getting hit by a pitch the Tigers were able to bat completely through the lineup putting up an additional three runs and knocking Santa Clara's starter Jerrica Castagno out of the game.
Chelsea Engle with support of the Tigers four runs picked up her first shutout of the year. In seven complete innings Engle relinquished only five hits and three walks. In the fourth inning with a runner on second and one out Engle was able to get back to back ground balls hit to Junior Casey Goldsand (Scottsdale, Arizona) and get out of the inning unscathed.
In the loss Castagno fell to 0-6 on the year and dropped Santa Clara to 0-10.
The Tigers return to action on Thursday February 21 at 8pm against team USA in an exhibition match to start the Palm Springs Classic. Then Pacific will play #9 Oklahoma Friday February 22 at 5:30 to open the Palm Springs Classic.
