Stockton, Calif. - Playing at home for the first time in three weeks the Pacific soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Valparaiso on Friday, September 21. With the win the Tigers moved to 4-2-1 on the season while the Crusaders dropped to 5-3 overall.
The Tigers jumped out early against the Crusaders and never looked back to end their recent two game skid, taking advantage of their home crowd and home stadium to get back into the winning column. Senior Bunny Dickson (Millbrae, Calif.) posted the lone goal of the contest in the 20th minute of play with a slotted ball into the lower right corner of the goal past Erin Murray of Valparaiso. Dickson was presented with the scoring opportunity after freshman Sammi Teramae (Kapolei, Hawaii) slotted a through ball between two Crusader defenders, freeing Dickson behind the defense and into a 1v1 situation with Murray. Murray's only option was to come off her line to try to play the ball, but Dickson proved to be too fast for the Crusader 'keeper, beating her to the ball and to the score.
The goal marked Dickson's third goal of the season, placing her into a tie with senior Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.) for the team lead. Teramae increased her team lead in assists with her fifth of the season. The goal marked the second time this season the duo has hooked up for a score.
Pacific kept the heat on Valparaiso for much of the night, outshooting the Crusaders 18-9 and held and 11-4 advantage in shots on goal for the evening. The Tigers had many chances to break open the contest throughout the night, but Murray kept her team close with 10 saves in the game. The Tigers' best chance of the night to increase their lead came in the 61st minute when junior Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) earned a penalty kick after being taken down inside Valparaiso's 18, however, Murray again came up with the save to keep the Crusaders alive.
King led the Tigers with seven shots on the night with four coming on frame. She nearly missed tallying her second goal of the season late in the second half, but her right footed strike glanced off the post and back into play.
Senior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) earned her fourth shutout of the season and 18th of her career with four saves on the night.
The Tigers will be back in action at home on Sunday, September 23, as they host Cal State Bakersfield at 2:00 pm at Stagg Memorial Stadium.
