San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The Pacific softball team could not hold off the championship hopes of Cal Poly on Friday, May 11, as the Mustangs took both games of the conference doubleheader, winning 3-0 and 3-2. The losses dropped the Tigers to 34-21 overall and 9-8 in conference action while the Mustangs secured the Big West's title by improving to 38-15 on the season and 13-4 in conference play.
Looking to bounce back from a series loss a week ago the Tigers ran into a hot Cal Poly team that was led by Robyn Kontra in the circle in game one. Kontra pitched one of her finest games of her career as she held Pacific's potent offense to just one hit in seven innings of play. Kontra had a no-hitter going for six and a third before senior Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.) knocked a single up the middle in the top of the seventh inning to break up the no-hit bid.
For the Tigers, sophomore Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) pitched well in her own right as she relinquished just five hits and three runs, only one of which was earned, as she fell to 19-14 overall on the season. Engle will be in search of her 20th win of the season tomorrow, May 12, as she will head back to the circle for the regular season finale.
In the second game of the day the Tigers got off on the right foot as they posted two runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead just as the Mustangs had done in the early game. Pacific's first three batters reached base safely with sophomore Casey Goldsand (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and junior Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) reaching with back-to-back singles after senior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) led the game off with a walk.
With one out, senior Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.) delivered a sacrifice fly to left field to score Carbonatto. Freshman Kellee Wilson (Tracy, Calif.) delivered a single of her own two batters later to bring home Pacific's second run of the inning to give Jorgensen a 2-0 lead heading into her first appearance in the circle.
Jorgensen was solid for the Tigers throughout the entire game as she allowed just three hits to the Mustang's offense through the first five innings of the game. It was not until the sixth inning that Cal Poly was able to get to Jorgensen as the Mustangs were able to plate a single run in the bottom of the inning to close the deficit to a single run at 2-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Mustangs were able to rallyh for two runs to steal away the game from the Tigers and lay claim to their first Big West title in program history. Cal Poly posted three hits in the inning led by Lisa Modglin's fourth hit of the day, a double to left center the brought home the first run of the inning.
The Tigers and Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, May 12 as the 2007 regular season come to an end.
