Honolulu, Hawaii - With the help of four runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Pacific Tigers softball team defeated Liberty by a score of 7-3 in Thursday's action of the Spring Fling Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii.
With the win the Tigers improved to 12-5 on the season, while the Flames fell to 9-6 on the year.
Knotted at 3-3 entering the extra frame, the Tigers scored four runs on five hits to take a commanding 7-3 lead. The inning began as senior Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.) was placed on second base in accordance with Spring Fling Tournament rules for an extra inning contest.
Hagen moved to third base on a ground-out by senior Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.). Following a walk to Pacific sophomore Brianan Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.), sophomore Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) gave the Tigers the lead with an RBI infield single. Pinch hitter Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) made it a 5-3 game with an RBI double to left center, plating pinch runner junior Vianney Campos (Guadalajara, Mexico).
Pacific added two more runs on RBI singles from freshman Nicole Gradwohl (Livermore, Calif.) and senior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) to push their lead to 7-3.
Carbonatto's single in the eighth inning was a historic hit for the senior as she tied the Pacific career record for hits with her 231st hit as a Tiger.
In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) retired Liberty in order to earn her fifth win of the season. Engle (5-4) tossed all eight innings and allowing only six hits and three runs, one of which was unearned. She also recorded seven strike outs and gave up two walks.
Liberty's Sarah Ellis suffered the loss in the contest as she allowed seven runs on 12 hits and two walks.
The Tigers continue play at the Spring Fling Tournament against Boston College later on Thursday.
