Tigers Can't Hold on Against No. 14 Oregon State

March 7, 2007

Box Score

Honolulu, Hawaii - After holding No. 14 Oregon State scoreless for six innings, the Tigers fell to the Beavers by the score of 3-2 on Mar. 7 at the Spring Fling in Honolulu, Hawaii. With the loss Pacific fell to 11-4 on the season, while Oregon State advanced to 13-7 on the year.

In a game controlled by the Tigers throughout and dominated by sophomore Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) in the circle, all it took was one bad pitch and one swing of the bat to snatch the victory away from the Tigers. As the Tigers had done so many times throughout the early parts of this season, the Beavers used a late rally and a two out walk-off three-run home run to end Pacific's upset bid.

Through six innings, Engle had given up just two hits and struck out five to give the Tigers the opportunity for the win. In the seventh, Engle started things off strong with a strike out, but got into her first trouble of the game when Paige Lowe bunted her way on base and moved to second when Stefanie Ewing was struck with a pitch. With two on, Engle struck again posting her seventh strike out of the game to get the Tigers with in one out of the win. However, Longfellow put the game away with her third home run of the season, a shot over the right field wall.

The Tigers struck for five hits in the game and plated the contest's first two runs on a two out, two RBI triple by senior Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.). The Tigers were able to take advantage of the lone defensive error of the game by the Beavers to put seniors Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.) on base in front of Curtier. The triple was the only hit of the game for Curtier, but the strike into right center field marked the 200th hit of her career.

With the loss Engle dropped to 4-4 on the season. Her final line was three runs on four hits with seven strike outs. For Oregon State, Brianne McGowan earned the complete game victory for Oregon State.

The Tigers will take on Hawai'i in the night cap on March 7 as they take on the Rainbow Wahine at 7:00 pm (PT).
