Jorgensen's Gem Leads Pacific Past UNLV 8-0 In Five Innings

March 25, 2007

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Behind a commanding performance from junior Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) the Pacific softball team picked up a five inning, 8-0, shutout of UNLV on Sunday, March 25. The win was the Tigers second of the tournament over the Rebels and gave them their 20th win of the season to move to 20-11 on the year.

Offensively, the Tigers jumped all over the Rebels' pitching staff to start the game as Pacific was first to bat in the contest. In the first inning the Tigers posted a single run to take the early lead, a feat that has seen the Tigers win 11 of 13 games coming into the day when scoring in the first frame. After two one out walks and an errant throw on a steal attempt put runners on first and third for the Tigers, sophomore Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) wasted no time getting the Tigers out front with a single into left field that drove in senior Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.) from third.

In the second, Pacific put some distance between itself and the Rebels as the Tigers knocked out five hits and scored four runs in the inning to go up 5-0. Sophomore Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) led the inning off with a crushing shot over the wall in left field for her fourth home run of the season.

Four batters later the long ball struck again for Pacific when senior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) blasted her third home run of the season, a three run shot to right field. Carbonatto's power situation was setup by the Tigers' eight and nine hitters as sophomore Casey Goldsand (Scottsdale, Ariz.) continued to shine at the plate during the week with a single to left-center field followed by junior Vianney Campos' (Guadalajara, Mexico) bunt single that put two runners on.

After being held quiet in the third inning the Tigers bats popped off again in the fourth, sticking another crooked number on the scoreboard, this time posted three runs on four hits. With one out, Campos again legged out an infield single to get things started. She would finish the day 2-for-3 at the plate. Campos moved to second on an infield single to third base by Carbonatto and to third as the speedy duo executed a double steal to put runners on second and third with only one out.

With two runners in scoring position Hagen left no doubt to her claim as one of the top performers at Pacific's Mini Tournament as she lifted her fifth home run of the season to dead center field to clear the bases and put the Tigers up 8-0. The Tigers would add another hit in the inning before being retired. Pacific would go down in order in the top of the fifth inning.

Receiving eight runs of support is always comforting to a pitcher, but on the day, Jorgensen would actually only need one run to secure her sixth win of the season as she pitched a gem for the Tigers in the circle. With all of her pitches working for her from the beginning, Jorgensen would have a career day in the scorebook as she recorded a career-best 11 strikeouts, more than doubling her previous best of five. In five innings of work, Jorgensen relinquished just two hits and walked three, including a hit batter, to face just five batters over the minimum of 15 hitters in the run-ruling. In addition to her pitching, Jorgensen went 1-for-3 at the plate hitting in the five hole.

In all, the Tigers posted eight runs on 10 hits to put away the Rebels. Carbonatto, Hagen and Campos each had two hits to lead the Tigers while only two of Pacific's starters were held with out a hit in the five inning contest. Carbonatto led the way with three RBI and two runs scored.
