Honolulu, Hawaii - Playing for the sixth time in four days, the Pacific softball team earned a spot in the third place game at the Hawai'i Spring Fling with a 9-3 win over Boston College on Saturday, March 10. With the win the Tigers improved to 14-6 on the season.
For the second time at the Spring Fling tournament, the Tigers came away victorious over the Eagles, this time knocking out nine runs on nine hits.
After giving up a run in the first inning to Boston College, Pacific took control of the game and never looked back plating three runs in the bottom half of the inning. After three of the Tigers' first four batters walked to load the bases, sophomore Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) put Pacific on the scoreboard with a two RBI single into left center field. Up one run, freshman Karie Wilson (Glendale, Ariz.) put the Tigers up two with an RBI single of her own.
Just like the inning before, Boston College managed to plate a single run in the top of the second inning to cut the Tigers' lead to just one run at 3-2 with a sacrifice fly from Amy Tunstall.
Again, the Tigers dented the plate three times in the bottom half of the inning to put the game away and take a 6-2 lead. Freshman Brittany Hendrickson (San Jose, Calif.) started things off for the Tigers with an infield single and advanced to third on an errant throw by the Eagle's third baseman who was fielding a sacrifice attempt by senior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.). With the pair on base, senior Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly into right field that was deep enough to score Hendrickson from third. With one run on the board and errant pitch put senior Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.) on first and moved Carbonatto to second from which the pair executed a double steal to move into scoring position. Up next, sophomore Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) chopped a pitch to shortstop that scored Carbonatto and off of the resulting error also scored Curtier to close out the scoring for the inning.
Pacific continued to pour it on in the bottom of the third inning as the Tigers scored a pair of runs to increase their lead to 8-2. With a one-out hit by freshman Kellee Wilson (Tracy, Calif.) and another defensive error by the Eagles the Tigers were able to plate an unearned run to start the inning followed by an RBI triple by Carbonatto. The triple was her second of the season and 10th of her career, moving her into a tie for fourth all-time in Pacific program history with Jennae Lambdin (1980-83).
The Tigers would add their ninth run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning on the fourth home run of the season by Curtier. The long ball was the 38th of her career.
In the circle, sophomore Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) picked up her sixth win of the season to move to 6-4 on the year. She pitched six innings in the win, giving up seven hits, three runs (two earned) while striking out seven.
Pacific will finish up play at the Hawai'i Spring Fling as they take on Liberty for the third time in the tournament in the third place game. Each team has taken a meeting at the tournament.
