Riverside, Calif. - Playing on the road for the first time in nearly a month, the Pacific soccer team was held to a 1-1 draw at UC Riverside on Friday, October 12. The draw moved the Tigers to 6-4-3 overall and 1-1-1 in Big West play while the Highlanders moved to 7-5-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in conference action.
Despite outplaying the Highlanders for much of the 110:00 minutes of action, the Tigers were unable to come away with their second win of the conference season as the Highlanders were able to endure 19 shots by Pacific, yet only one goal.
The Tigers' lone strike of the contest came early in the game when senior Carla Vellutini (Elk Grove, Calif.) put Pacific up one goal in the 23rd minute with her third strike of the season. Vellutini took advantage of Deanna Borgett, UC Riverside's goalkeeper, coming off of her line to clear a free kick played into the box to net the goal for the Tigers. With a foul called against the Highlanders, senior Montez Harrison (Oakland, Calif.) sent a free ball into the scoring area for Pacific looking for her teammates' heads. With the ball in the air, junior Andrea Carrara (Belmont, Calif.) flicked a pass to Vellutini who in turn redirected the ball into the back of the net with a flick of her own over Borgett. Harrison was credited with the assist on the play.
Up one goal, the Tigers were unable to hold their lead as the Highlanders answered back just over 10 minutes later as Tessa Lennala got behind Pacific's defense for a free look at the Tigers' goal. Lennala received a through ball from Sarah Mohammadi and beat senior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) to the right for the neutralizer.
On the day, Souza was credited with five saves while Borgett tallied seven. Junior Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) led the way for the Tigers offensively with five shots, three of which were on frame, while Vellutini made the most of her lone shot in the contest. Lennala was credited with nine of the Highlanders' 14 shots in the game.
Pacific will be back in action on Sunday, October 13, in Fullerton, Calif. as they take on the two-time defending Big West Tournament Champion Titans of Cal State Fullerton. The game is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Titan Stadium.
