Stockton, Calif. - In front of another record crowd of 960 spectators, the Pacific women's soccer team's record run to start the 2006 season came to an end as the Tigers fell to No. 19 Brigham Young (BYU), 1-0, on Thursday, Sept. 14. The loss was the first of the season for the Tigers as they fell to 5-1-1 on the season while the Cougars improved to 5-1-0.
It took over 661:01 minutes into the 2006 season, 84 minutes into the night and a perfectly executed play before the Tigers' defense finally relinquished a goal on the season.
The lone strike of the night came off the foot of Katie Larkin at the 84:03 mark of the contest. Brooke Bowman slotted a pass across the middle to the streaking Larkin at the back post who directed a shot low and to the far post to score the game-winning goal for the Cougars.
Despite eventually falling to the No. 19 ranked team in the nation, the Tigers controlled play for much of the contest, outshooting the Cougars, 14-11 on the night. Senior Kelsey Nagel (Lynnwood, Wash.) led Pacific with four shots, three of which were put on frame including two strikes from over 45 yards out that had to be punched over the cross bar by Erika Woodbury, BYU's 'keeper. Woodbury made six saves for the game.
In goal for the Tigers, junior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) made five saves. The first goal of the season against Souza ended her record streak of 661:01 scoreless minutes in net.
Pacific will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 19 as they travel to Fresno, Calif. to take on the No. 25 ranked Fresno State Bulldogs. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
