Game Two Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific softball team split their final regular season doubleheader of 2006, taking game one, 1-0, before falling in the second game, 6-2, on Friday, May 12. With the split the Tigers improved to 26-24 overall and 7-10 in Big West play while the Mustangs moved to 26-23 overall and 10-7 in conference action.

Game one saw another fine pitching performance from freshman Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) as she threw her fourth complete game shutout of the season. Santos gave up seven scattered hits on the day and was forced to work out of a couple of jams, but in the end picked up her 10th win of the season.

While Santos got the win with support from her team, her counterpart, Robyn Kontra could not say the same thing as she picked up the loss for the Mustangs. Kontra gave up six hits and one run in seven innings pitched, however, the lone run of the game was scored on a miscue by Cal Poly's centerfielder. With junior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Steven, Wash.) sitting at second base, senior Brittany Hyams (Huntington Beach, Calif.) blooped a single into center field which advanced Carbonatto to third. Seeing no one cover second, Hyams never stopped around first, forcing an errant throw from Lisa Modglin that enabled Carbonatto to score the eventual winning run.

The second game was a reversal of fortunes for the Tigers as wild pitches and back-to-back errors cost Pacific. The Mustangs put together a four run second inning, taking advantage of four hits, four stolen bases and two wild pitches to do their damage.

The Tigers answered back with single runs in both the second and the third to climb back with in two runs. In the second, junior Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.) roped a two-out double down the left field line and scored on a double down the right field line by starting pitcher, sophomore Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.). In the third, the top of the order came through with three singles to load the bases before sophomore Lindsey Garehime (Redwood City, Calif.) drove in Carbonatto with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Despite climbing back, the Tigers would relinquish two more runs in the fourth inning, stemming from back-to-back errors to start off the inning. Sarah Iwata came through with a two-out double to left-center field to drive in two unearned runs in the inning and seal the game for the Mustangs.

Jorgensen picked up her seventh loss of the season in the circle, giving up four runs on four hits in 2.0 innings pitched. For the Mustangs, Kontra took the win as she came into the game in the fourth inning in relief for Cal Poly. Kontra gave up just two hits in 4.0 innings of work.

With her first hit in her first at bat of game one, Carbonatto picked up her 200th career hit in three seasons of play. She currently has 202 hits placing her into a tie for fifth all-time in program history. Her two runs scored moved her into eighth place all-time in conference history with 120 runs scored.

Pacific's game one win guaranteed the Tigers of their 11th straight winning season, extending their program record setting mark.

The Tigers and Mustangs will close out the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, May 13, with a single game at 12:00 pm at Bill Simoni Field. Before the game, seniors Brittany Hyams, Crystal Presson and Kristen Allen will be honored.
