Tiges claim first Big West series of the season, 6-1 over UC Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers softball team claimed its first Big West series of the season with a 6-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Apr. 9.

With the win, the Tigers moved to 21-15 overall and 2-1 in the Big West Conference, while UC Santa Barbara fell to 16-13 overalll and 1-2 in conference play.

Pacific got on the board in the top of the second inning by taking advantage of a hit batter. Sophomore Lindsey Garehime (Redwood City, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Garehime moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.), then took third on a ground out by sophomore Mandy Hickman (Phoenix, Ariz.). Pacific freshman Casey Goldsand (Scottsdale, Ariz.) drove in the first run of the game with a single to center field.

The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the third as senior Brittany Hyams (Huntington Beach, Calif.) reached on a wild pitch, after striking out. Junior Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.) walked to put runners at first and second. A sacrifice bunt by freshman Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) gave the Tigers runners at second and third. Senior Kristen Allen (Citrus Heights, Calif.) made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single to left. The Tigers added a run later in the inning on an RBI bases loaded walk to Hickman.

Allen nabbed her second RBI of the game in the fourth inning as she singled to right field, driving in Curtier from second base. Curtier drew a one-out walk to reach first, then went to second on a single by Weyman, setting up the RBI opportunity for Allen.

UC Santa Barbara got their lone run in the fourth on a solo home run by Tiffany Wright.

Pacific added single runs in the sixth and seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Hagen in the sixth and an unearned run in the seventh.

Tiger freshman Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) picked up the victory for Pacific as she allowed one run on six hits in seven innings to move to 7-5 on the season.

UC Santa Barbara's Jennifer Davis (11-10) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks in 2.2 innings.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 14 as the Tigers travel to Riverside, Calif. to face the UC Riverside Highlanders in a doubleheader, beginning at 12 p.m.
