Game Two Box Score
Long Beach, Calif. - The Pacific softball team dropped a pair of 1-0 games to Long Beach State in a Big West Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 29. With the losses the Tigers fell to 24-20 overall and 5-6 in conference action while the 49ers improved to 25-18 overall and 10-4 in conference.
A pitching duel from the start, the Tigers came up on the wrong side of a one run shutout in game one of the doubleheader. Sophomore Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) started the game for the Tigers and went 6.0 complete, but an offensive drought forced Jorgensen into her fifth loss of the season (4-5). For the game, Jorgensen gave up five hits and five walks in the game, but came through in the clutch, shutting down the 49ers for five innings.
The difference in game one came in the sixth inning as Long Beach State's Tiffanie Wedell began the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Jonae Perez knocked a 3-2 pitch up the middle that had the potential to be an inning ending double play, but a poor hop allowed the ball to squirt into center field, scoring the lone run of the game.
Early in the contest, the Tigers halted a threat by the 49ers as they gunned down the potential go ahead run in the third inning off of a ball hit to junior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) in center field.
Game two was much of the same for the Tigers as they received a superb outing from freshman Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) in the circle, but struggles at the plate cost the Tigers another 1-0 contest. Santos went 6.0 innings giving up seven hits and one walk while striking out six.
The 49ers scored early in game two, pushing across the eventual winning run in the second inning. A two out single by Lacy Tyler, a wild pitch and a single by Melanie McCauley dented the plate for the second time in the day and first in the game for Long Beach State.
Pacific did have its chances in the game with two great chances coming in the final two innings of the game. Sophomore Lindsey Garehime (Redwood City, Calif.) drove a 3-2 pitch to dead center that had a chance to be her fourth pinch-hit homerun of the season, but Breezy Goad made a spectacular catch with her glove to the wall to rob the Tigers. In the seventh, junior Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.) led the inning off with an infield single and proceeded to swipe second on the play as the 49ers lost focus. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Kristen Allen (Citrus Heights, Calif.), Curtier was stranded at third as the Tigers fell for the second time to Long Beach State.
The Tigers and the 49ers will resume their three game series tomorrow, Sunday, April 30. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
