Game Two Box Score
Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific softball team dropped a pair of games to visiting Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, April 22. The Tigers were shutout in game one, 3-0, before falling in five innings, 11-3, in game two. The losses dropped the Tigers out of first place in the Big West as they fell to 24-17 overall and 5-3 in conference action while the Titans improved to 27-19 overall and 8-3 overall.
Coming back from injury after a two week absence, freshman Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) started the opening game for the Tigers. Despite a strong showing after the layoff, Santos picked up just her fourth loss of the season, falling to 9-4 on the year. Santos went 6.0 innings in the contest, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out five.
The Titans cracked the 0-0 tie in the fourth inning, taking advantage of back-to-back, one out walks. The game-winning run was driven in by Jenna Wheeler as she doubled down the left field line for her second hit of the game. Wheeler finished 2-for-3 in the opening game.
Cal State Fullerton added to its lead in the sixth inning, on a solo homerun by Ashley Van Boxmeer. In the seventh, the Titans struck again as Candice Baker hit a two-out, 3-2 pitch out to left center to give the Titans another insurance run.
After a close game one, Cal State Fullerton dominated the Tigers in game two, run-ruling the Tigers in five innings. The five inning loss was the Tigers first of the season. In addition, this was the first time the Tigers have been run-ruled at home since the inception of the program in 1977.
The Titans scored in four of the five innings of play in game two, posting a single run in both the first and second inning before breaking open the game in the third with three runs. The major damage for the Tigers came in the fifth and final inning as Cal State Fullerton posted six runs in the inning, all coming off of two-out homeruns. Wheeler continued her good day with a two run homerun before Candice Baker capped the inning with a grand slam to left centerfield.
The Tigers had their opportunities early in the game, posting three runs, two of which came in the third inning. Pacific missed its opportunity to add more as the Tigers left the bases loaded in the inning, despite having one out when the bases became full.
In the circle for the Tigers, sophomore Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) picked up the loss to fall to 4-4 on the year. Jorgensen went 2.1 innings while giving up three hits and four earned runs. For the Titans, Marissa Marzan picked up both wins on the day as she pitched the complete game in the first contest and came in to relieve Baker in the second. Marzan entered the game in the third inning with the bases loaded, ending the Tigers' threat.
The Tigers and Titans will finish their three game series tomorrow, Sunday, April 23, with a single game at Bill Simoni Field. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
