April 2, 2006

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Looking for the three game sweep, the Tigers were denied by the Aggies, falling 8-5 to UC Davis on Sunday, April 2. With the loss the Tigers fell to 19-14 overall while the Aggies improved to 10-22.

The Tigers jumped out in front of the Aggies in the second inning posting two runs in the inning. The Tigers freshman got things rolling in the inning as designated player Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) lifted her third homerun of the season, a solo shot to right center to start the inning. Two batters later, Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) took advantage of an error by the Aggies' first baseman to give the Tigers a runner. She eventually came around on an RBI double by sophomore Mandy Hickman (Phoenix, Ariz.)

With a two run lead, the Tigers continued to threaten in the inning, loading the bases with only one out. However, the Tigers were unable to capitalize, stranding all three runners, a situation that would come back to haunt Pacific later in the contest.

After giving up two runs, the Aggies' offense struck for one run in the top of the third inning. Trish Paine led the inning off with an infield single eventually coming around to score without the ball leaving the infield for UC Davis. Paine hit safely in each of her three at bats on the day, scoring three runs and stealing two bases.

UC Davis took the lead from Pacific in the fifth, scoring three runs in the inning on three hits including a two out, two RBI double by Roxanne Hannen. Again, the initial damage was done by Paine as she led the inning off with a bunt single.

The game was broken open by the Aggies in the sixth inning as UC Davis' offense posted a four spot in the top of the inning. After retiring the first two batters by strike out, the Tigers gave up an opening single to Paine before walking the next two Aggie hitters. With the bases loaded, Nikki Sheldon doubled to left to drive in two. A single by Ashley Johnson and a dropped outfield relay allowed two more runs to score for the Aggies.

Down six, the Tigers mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to three runs on a pinch-hit, three-run homerun by sophomore Lindsay Garehime (Redwood City, Calif.). The homerun was Garehime's second pinch-hit homerun of the season; however, the Tigers would not get any close than three runs.

In the circle for the Tigers, freshman Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) picked up the loss dropping to 6-5 on the season. Engle gave up four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings pitched. In relief, Santos surrendered four runs, three earned, on three hits in 2.0 innings pitched.

For the Aggies, Lauren Pieretti picked up the win after coming into the game in relief in the second inning. She gave up three earned on four hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Christina Grimm picked up her first save of the season, relinquishing one hit in 2.0 innings pitched.

The loss was the first for the Tigers in their 10 game all-time series with the Aggies. In addition, the win was UC Davis' first road win of 2006.

The Tigers will next be in action on Wednesday, April 5 as they play host to the No. 8 ranked California Golden Bears. The game is scheduled for 12:00 pm at Bill Simoni Field.
