Lauren Weyman (Carlsbad, Calif.) the Pacific Tigers softball team defeated San Jose State, 3-2, in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 1. San Jose State won game two 5-0, to get a split in the doubleheader.
The Tigers moved to 8-8 on the season, while San Jose State moved to 7-7.
In game one, Pacific got on the board first in the bottom of the first frame as junior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) led off the inning with a double down the right field line. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of senior Brittany Hyams (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Curtier followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers' second run of the game came in the second inning as Weyman hit her first career home run with two outs in the inning.
San Jose State got a run back in the top of the fifth, but Pacific starter freshman Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) left the bases loaded by striking out San Jose State pinch hitter Danielle Brown.
Leading 2-1, Curtier supplied the eventual winning run as she ripped her second home run of the season over the left field fence.
Santos (3-1) allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings for the win, while San Jose State's Nicole Luna-Pickens (3-2) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits.
In game two, San Jose State's Kelly Harrison allowed just two hits in pitching a complete game shutout for the Spartans. Curtier and senior Kristen Allen (Citrus Heights, Calif.) picked up singles for the Tigers.
Pacific's biggest threat came in the fourth inning when the Tigers loaded the bases with none out, but were unable to score.
The Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, after the Tigers committed three errors. San Jose State added two runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh inning to gain the split.
Tiger starting pitcher Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) gave up two earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Pacific is next in action with a home doubleheader against St. Francis on Sunday, March 5 at Bill Simoni Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
