Fresno, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers softball team dropped a pair of close contests to No. 17 Fresno State on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The Tigers fell 2-0 in game one, then lost 6-5 in the second contest.
In the first game, Fresno State freshman Robin Mackin held Pacific to just three hits, all singles, as the Tigers fell 2-0. The Bulldogs scored both of their runs in the first inning of Pacific senior Kristen Allen (Citrus Heights, Calif.). Allen (0-1) allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits.
Two of the Tigers' three hits in game one came from junior Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.).
The Pacific bats came alive, however, in game two as the Tigers scored five runs on nine hits.
Pacific jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning as senior Lizzie Hagen (Anaheim, Calif.) and sophomore Mandy Hickman (Phoenix, Ariz.) drew walks to open the second. The third batter of the inning, senior Crystal Presson (Livermore, Calif.), captalized on the opportunity by sending a 1-2 pitch over the center field wall to give Pacific a 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, but Pacific answered in the top of the third as Hagen ripped an RBI triple to right-center, scoring sophomore Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.).
Fresno State pulled within a run at 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the third.
Once again the Tigers responded as this time Carbonatto launched a one-out triple to left field. Carbonatto scampered home on a two-out RBI single from junior Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.), giving Pacific a 5-3 edge.
Pacific held the Bulldogs in check until the bottom of the sixth, when Fresno State scored three runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman.
Freshman Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) suffered the loss (0-1) as she allowed three runs in three innings pitched.
Carbonatto led the Tigers offensively in the doubleheader loss, collecting two hits in each game as she was 4-for-9 on the night.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, Feb. 17 as Pacific begins play in the Wildcat Invitational at 9 a.m. against North Carolina State.
