Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's soccer team continued their dominance at home this season, taking down Fresno State, 3-1, on Friday, September 9. With the win the Tigers improved to 3-1-1 on the season while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-4-0 overall.
In a contest that saw 35 combined fouls and two yellow cards, the Tigers were able to keep their composure and grit out their third consecutive home win of the season. Pacific used three first season goals to earn the victory.
The Tigers got on the board first as sophomore transfer Gennaka Fox (El Monte, Calif.) found the back of the net for the first time in her Pacific career in the 42nd minute of the game. Fox had entered the game just six minutes prior to give the Tigers fresh legs and energy in the front. Fox found herself with her scoring chance off of a high cross from sophomore Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.). Van Dorn had worked herself free along the left sideline after taking control of a perfectly placed pass down the line by junior Carmen Padilla (San Jose, Calif.).
With the one goal advantage coming out of the half, the Tigers continued to press looking for more. Their aggression allowed the Bulldogs to counterattack which led to a cornerkick for Fresno State in the 72nd minute. Off the corner, the Bulldogs' Alison Sill placed a shot on goal that was blocked by sophomore 'keeper Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.), but not controlled. With the loose ball, Kortney Lewis punched it through the Tigers' defenses for the equalizer.
Despite seeing their one goal lead fall, the Tigers held tough and with a rejuvenated attack, pressed forward, looking for the go-ahead goal before the end of regulation. After earning a cornerkick with less than four minutes remaining, the Tigers got their game-winning goal from their defensive captain, junior Kelsey Nagel (Lynnwood, Wash.). Nagel soared above the Bulldogs' defense on a well struck corner by freshman Laura King (Livermore, Calif.) and flicked the ball into the lower right corner for her first goal of the season. The assist was King's first career assist.
The Tigers got an insurance goal with 00:40 seconds left in the game as sophomore midfielder Audrey Booth (Salt Lake City, Utah) made her presence felt in her first game at home after missing the first two games of the season due to injury with her first goal of the season. Booth fired a shot into the back of the net after taking control of a deflected cross from Van Dorn. With her second assist of the game, Van Dorn took control of the team's point lead for the season, notching her seventh point of the season.
Defensively, the Tigers held the Bulldogs to eight shots on the night and Souza made three saves in goal. Sophomore Montez Harrison (Oakland, Calif.) and Nagel shutdown the middle of the field for the Tigers, forcing the Bulldog attack out to the wings and away from the goal.
The Tigers will next be in action as they travel to San Jose, Calif. on Sunday, September 11, to take on the Spartans of San Jose State. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
