Seattle, Wash. - The Pacific women's soccer team pushed its unbeaten streak to three games with a 1-1 draw against the No. 20 Washington Huskies on Friday, September 2, in the first game of the Husky/Nike Invitational. With the tie the Tigers improved to 2-0-1 on the season while the Huskies moved to 0-1-2 overall.
The Tigers flew out of the gates as sophomore Carla Vellutini (Elk Grove, Calif.) scored her second goal of the season and second in as many games just 2:05 into the contest. Vellutini netted from six yards out as she took a pass from sophomore Bunny Dickson (Millbrae, Calif.), spun towards the goal, and fired a shot into the center of the net. The assist was Dickson's first of the season.
With no time to celebrate or rest, the Tigers found the game tied up in the 4th minute on a goal by the Huskies' Katy Dowling. Her goal was assisted by Kim Taylor.
After what looked as though the game would turn into a barn-burner, both goalkeepers settled in, producing some spectacular saves for their respective teams. Sophomore Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) got the start for the Tigers' in goal and in front of her home state crowd produced four saves on the night. Kelsey Rasmussen for Washington posted seven saves on the night as Pacific outshot Washington 21-to-14 overall and 5-to-1 in overtime.
The Tigers attack was led by junior Carmen Padilla (San Jose, Calif.) who fired off seven shots including five on goal while Dani Bridges also took seven shots for the Huskies.
This was the second overtime game in a row for the Tigers and their first draw of the season after leading the nation in draws in 2004 with six.
Pacific will continue play at the Husky/Nike Invitational on Sunday, September 4, as they take on the No. 4 team in the nation, the Portland Pilots. Game time is scheduled for 11:00 am.
