STARKVILLE, Miss. - A total of three Pacific softball players today received National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-West Region honors, as selected by NFCA member coaches in the region. Sophomore first baseman Jennifer Curtier (Lancaster, Calif.) was named to the first team, while senior shortstop Michelle Anunciation (Chino Hills, Calif.) and sophomore center fielder Gina Carbonatto (Lake Stevens, Wash.) were selected to the second team.
Pacific finished its 2005 season with a 30-25 overall record and a 12-9 mark in Big West Conference play.
Curtier, who was selected to the NFCA All-West Region Second Team as a freshman in 2004, currently leads the Big West in each of the three triple crown categories with a .404 batting average and program single season records of 17 home runs and 55 RBI (in 55 games). She is looking to become the conference's first outright triple crown winner since Chelo Lopez of Cal State Northridge in 1998. In addition to her triple crown numbers, Curtier also leads the conference in walks (30), runs scored (47), slugging percentage (.795), and on base percentage (.495). With nine stolen bases on the season as well, Curtier was one steal shy of becoming the first Pacific player to record double digit totals in both home runs and steals.
In Pacific's final series of the season, Curtier collected her 28th career home run, becoming the program's career home run leader. Carolyn Wilson previously tallied 27 home runs for the Tigers from 1995-97. Curtier will take aim at the Big West record of 47 home runs, set by Cal State Fullerton's Yasmin Mossadeghi from 1999-2002, during her final two campaigns.
Academically, Curtier was recently selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII Team and will advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
A three-time All-Big West Conference honoree, Anunciation earned her first NFCA All-Region award this season. She was second to Curtier in the Big West batting race with a .365 batting average. She also had a career-high with 40 RBI this season, including 20 RBI in two-out situations. Anunciation won or shared Big West Conference Player of the Week honors each of the first three weeks of the 2005 season, becoming the first softball player in Big West history to win three consecutive Player of the Week awards. She finished her career in Pacific's career Top-10 in batting average, base hits, doubles, and RBI.
Carbonatto was fourth on the team and seventh in the Big West with a .358 season batting average, but led the conference with 67 base hits and ranked second with 45 runs scored. She also led the conference with 23 stolen bases (in 24 attempts). An exceptional defensive outfielder, Carbonatto was perfect in 79 defensive chances and led the team with nine outfield assists. She was selected to the NFCA All-West Region First Team and the NFCA All-America First Team as a freshman in 2004.
The All-Region honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America First, Second, or Third Teams. The All-America teams will be announced on ESPN during the Women's College World Series.
