Fullerton, Calif. - The Pacific women's soccer team fell for the third consecutive Big West Conference game, dropping a 3-2 contest at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, October 9. With the loss the Tigers fell to 7-6-1 overall and 0-3 in Big West play while the Titans improved to 10-3-0 overall and 2-1 in conference.
Despite seeing their offense get back on track, netting two goals in the game for the first time in nine games, a streak dating back to September 11, the Tigers were unable to come away with their first conference win of the season. With the game tied late at two goals apiece, the Tigers were downed in the 87th minute on a goal by Erin Shelton as she took a free kick from Rebekah Patrick and placed it in the back of the net from five yards out.
The game started slowly for both teams as neither side could break through the opposing defenses until Lisa Rosena found the back of the net in the 26th minute after a corner kick for Cal State Fullerton. The Tigers evened the score at one all as sophomore Bunny Dickson (Millbrae, Calif.) netted her second goal of the season. Dickson received a thru ball from junior Carmen Padilla (San Jose, Calif.) that she promptly took 1v1 against Karen Bardsley, betting the Titan 'keeper. The assist was Padilla's team leading fourth assist of the season and her first point since the opening weekend of the season.
With the game even heading into the half the Titans and Tigers exchanged a pair of goals midway through the second half before the game-winner in the 87th minute. Shelton, the Titan's eventual hero, put Cal State Fullerton ahead, 2-1, in the 62nd minute of the game as she beat sophomore Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) to the far post after receiving a long thru ball from Sara Johnson.
Less than one minutes later, the Tigers struck back to even the score at two on junior Suzy Peterson's (Granite Bay, Calif.) first goal of the season. Peterson was able to flick a header past Bardsley off of a free kick that was sent into the box by junior Kelsey Nagel (Lynnwood, Wash.). The assist was Nagel's second of the season.
Despite giving up three goals, Souza posted seven saves on the day as the Tigers were outshot 21-to-5. Bardsley did not tally a save, giving up two goals on two shots on goal for the Tigers.
The loss was the Tigers' second in a row, the first time this season the Tigers have lost two straight.
Pacific will look for its first conference win of the season on Friday, October 14, as they play host to the Matadors of Cal State Northridge. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
