FRESNO, Calif. – The Pacific men's golf team wrapped up the first two rounds of the Nick Watney Invitational Monday, as the Tigers finished in fourth place with a 13-under-par 555 at the Fort Washington Country Club.
With four Tigers under par, Pacific stands with four golfers sitting among the top half of the standings through the first day. The Tigers completed the first two rounds with 43 birdies, which ranks as the third-best mark behind Cal State Fullerton and Saint Mary's.
Sophomore
Timothy Jung put together one of his strongest performances as a Tiger to date, standing in a tie for tenth place with a six-under 136 after two rounds. Jung posted a score of under par in both rounds with a two-under 69 in the first round, followed by a four-under 67. Jung also strung together ten of the Tigers' birdies on the day.
In his second collegiate tournament, freshman
Carlos Astiazaran sits in a tie for 17th place with a four-under 138. Astiazaran tied Jung for the best round of the Tigers on the day with a four-under 67 in his first round, followed by an even par 71 in the afternoon portion.
Senior
Petr Janik scored a two-under 140 and finds himself in a tie for 27th place. Janik tallied a one-under 70 in both rounds, which also featured his eight birdies.
Senior
Maverick Pavletich wrapped up the day with the most birdies for the Tigers with 11, which sparked his two-round total of one-under 141 (70, 71) and put him in a tie for 32nd place. Senior
Alex Barclay rounded out the team scoring with a four-over 146 (72, 74), while freshman
Samuel Pampling made his Tiger debut as an individual and posted a 14-over 156 (83, 73).
"It was a total team effort today," said Pacific head coach
John Cook. "We have four guys under par after 36 holes. Carlos had a very solid 67 in the morning and Tim played great this afternoon. We are looking forward to coming back out in the morning and continue what we did today."
