STOCKTON, Calif. - Two traveled from the Tigers men's tennis team to start the fall component of their competitive season. Senior Peter Alam and junior transfer Justas Trainauskas represented Pacific in this past weekend's qualifier for the Battle of the Bay competition to be held September 22-24 in San Francisco.
 
Trainauskas saw action for his first competition as a Tiger, having joined the program this past off-season from Fairleigh Dickinson. Alam returns as a veteran senior for Pacific. The two were put to the test as they competed to see next weekend in both men's open singles and doubles.
 
Friday afternoon started with a first round bye for the Tigers. In the round of 32, Alam swiftly handled San Francisco's Giovanni Branchetti 6-4, 6-1. Trainauskas fared similarly against a Don, taking down Davide Cortimiglia 7-5, 6-2.
 
Both Tigers competed in Saturday's round of 16. Trainauskas fought Nevada's Pedro Liborio close, but his run came to an end as he fell 7-5,7⁸-6⁶. Alam took down California's Jonathan Irwanto 6-2, 7-5 that same day to move to Sunday's quarterfinals.
 
Early Sunday morning, Alam competed in the quarterfinals against UC Davis' Ryan Torres. He was stopped just short of the semifinals, as he fell 7⁷-6⁴, 6-2.
 
Teamed up for the first time, Alam and Trainauskas stormed to the east finals in the men's open doubles qualifier. Their run included three straight wins over top-seeded duos,including top-seed California tandem Irwanto and Tim Stepanov in the semifinals 8-6. Facing another Golden Bear duo in the finals Sunday afternoon, Alam and Trainauskas emerged victorious, taking down California's John Kim and Alexander Aney 8-3. The victory sends the Tigers to next weekend's main draw in men's doubles.
