STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team embarks on its breathtaking international tour to Spain on July 31.
"Honestly, the top priority is the cultural experience we can give our student-athletes," said Head Coach
Bradley Davis. "As a student-athlete, they sacrifice opportunities like the ability to study abroad. So, this opportunity we have to provide an international experience, one that many would not otherwise experience, is priority number one."
It will be the first international tour for the Tigers since 2016, when the program traveled to Italy.
The Tigers travel party, which includes the 15 players, will land in Madrid and start with a guided tour of the city and the Royal Palace. Pacific will play its first of three games on August 3 at 7:15 PM CEST/10;15 AM PST facing off against Madrid Select for the team's first in-game action of the 2023-24 year. Just 30km from Madrid, the team will tour the historic Castillo de Batres, a legendary castle where poet Garcilaso De la Vega wrote some of his most famous works.
The trip will be packed with events, as the team will travel to Valencia and Albufera National Park. The park offers to learn about the origins of Valencian cuisine, including the birthplace of paella, before a team dinner ends the evening. Game number two will be on August 3, against Elite Sports Academy at 7:30 PM CEST/10:30 AM PST.
"The opportunity to bond and start to build that team chemistry we know is so important," continues Davis. "Typically, a trip like this carries over and enhances those bonds during the season. We expect to come back as a closer program."
The Tigers will travel to Barcelona for the final four days of the trip. Once in Barcelona, the morning before their final game, the Tigers will start the day with a tour of the Sagrada Familia, one of the most famous churches in Europe and a building that has been under construction since 1882 and is the world's largest unfinished Catholic church, was proclaimed a Minor Basilica by Pope Benedict XVI. The church is considered 'one of the most extraordinary personal interpretations of Gothic architecture since the Middle Ages.' The tour will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the players to see a piece of history
The Tigers play their third and final game that night, August 7, at 8:30 PM CEST/11:30 AM PST against Catalonia Elite.
On the last day of the trip, the players will compete in an Amazing Race around Barcelona before hosting boosters and family for dinner that night.
