Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Game Tying Bucket Doesn’t Fall as Pacific Comeback Falls Just Short

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Junior Nyah Lowery had a look to force overtime but could not convert and the Pacific women's basketball team fell 68-70 to San Diego State at Viejas Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Leading up to Lowery's final attempt, Pacific (4-5) had erased what was a 14-point deficit halfway through the third quarter spurred on by the play of senior Sydney Ward and sophomore Daria Nestorov.

Ward was at her most lethal in the second half, scoring 11 of her team high 17 points in the half alongside three steals and two blocks. Not only a career-high, Ward's 17 points ties for the third most by a Tiger this season. Her final line consisted of 17 points (7-9 FG, 2-2 3pt), four rebounds, three blocks, three steals and an assist.

The other half of that equation was Nestorov who scored ten of her 14 points in the second half and added five rebounds and seven assists. Over the last four games the sophomore has had complete command of the offense dishing out 21 assists to just four turnovers.

Fellow sophomore Winner Bartholomew complimented the duo nicely in the middle and contributed 14 points on the afternoon, going 4-for-10 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the line. She's now risen her season scoring average to an even 13 points per game, a mark that leads the team.

The Tigers were put in a comeback position after an uncharacteristic day defending the three-pointer. The team entered the game ranked seventh in the country in three-point percentage defense before giving up 11 triples to San Diego State (5-3), six of which came in the first quarter. After that opening quarter Pacific forced more familiar results holding the Aztecs to 5-for-17 the rest of the way.

Coming up next Pacific heads to Nevada next Saturday to play the second half of its Mountain West Conference swing. The last time the Tigers and Wolfpack matched up was in 2022, where Pacific left Lawlor Events Center with a five-point victory. Tipoff in Reno is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
