Pacific Falls to Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - Strong second and fourth quarters were not enough for the Pacific women's basketball team (12-15, 7-9) to overcome #20 Gonzaga (23-3, 14-1) as the Zags remained undefeated at home in the 69-58 final.

Junior Liz Smith and senior Sam Ashby led the Tigers once again, Smith scored 13, and Ashby added 12. Sophomore Elizabeth Elliott led both teams with 12 rebounds. Junior Kadie Deaton added nine points, and Ashby dished out four assists.

The first two minutes of the game were close, with two Gonzaga baskets and an Ashby three made it a one-point game. The Zags responded with a 13-0 run to take a commanding lead with two minutes remaining.

Pacific responded well in the second quarter, outscoring Gonzaga 17-15. The Tigers went on an 8-3 run as the quarter wound down to cut the Gonzaga lead to just nine. A Zag basket with 28 seconds remaining put Gonzaga back up by 11 heading into the halftime break.

The third quarter was all Zags, outscoring the Tigers by 10. Ashby led the team in the quarter with five points and three assists. Junior Erica Adams hit a bank in three as time expired.

Pacific made back-to-back baskets to start the fourth quarter, with junior Cecilia Holmberg sinking a jumper, followed by Smith getting a steal and score to jumpstart the Pacific comeback attempt. Despite trailing by as many as 25 during the quarter, Pacific battled back thanks to eight points from Smith and seven from Holmberg to make it a 12-point Gonzaga lead with 2:35 to go. The scoring outburst stopped there, as Pacific only made one more basket in the quarter, and Gonzaga was held scoreless.

The Tigers continue the road trip at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, traveling to Portland.
