Men’s Golf in Sixth Place After Opening Round of Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. – Hosting its lone home tournament of the season, the Pacific men's golf team shot an opening round six-under-par 282, positioning in sixth place of 17 teams Monday at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at The Reserve at Spanos Park.

Pacific sent nine team members to play in the tournament, including a pair of Tigers making their season debuts. The Tigers had two golfers finish the first round in the top 20 of the player leaderboards.

"It was great to see Alex [Barclay] get off to a fantastic start this morning, leading us off today in the front nine," said Pacific head coach John Cook. "We had some ups and downs. Tim [Jung] had a great round and threw a couple eagles in there as well. Carlos [Astiazaran] found a way to shoot one-under for us today, so that was good. Petr [Janik] and Ian [Fritz] will bounce back tomorrow. We're excited to get back at it."

Senior Alex Barclay and sophomore Timothy Jung completed the opening round in a tie for sixth place, shooting five-under 67.

"There were a lot of positives today," said Barclay. "I got pretty hot with my putter, so that was nice. We got two more days to go, so let's keep playing well."

While Barclay shot a team-best seven of the Tigers' 17 birdies on the day, Jung collected his first two eagles of the season to bolster his score.

"I hit great shots on those two eagles from 15 feet," said Jung. "I made a positive stroke on both of those. I'm glad I made both of those eagles. I still have two more rounds ahead, so I hope to finish strong."

Freshman Carlos Astiazaran put together a solid effort in his first home event of the season, scoring a one-under 71 to stand in a tie for 29th place.

Senior Petr Janik and sophomore Ian Fritz rounded out the team scoring, ending the day with five-over 77.

In individual scoring, fifth-year senior Maverick Pavletich posted a five-over 77. Freshman Samuel Pampling finished with a seven-over 79. In their season debuts, junior Daniel Henely tallied an eight-over 80 and senior Haakon Mathiesen earned a 13-over 85.

"It's pretty awesome to play at home," said Barclay. "We have a lot of supporters that come out to watch us. It's exciting to play well in front of them."

Pacific tees off at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow as the Tigers compete in the second round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.

"It's a marathon, not a sprint," said Cook. "We're looking forward to another early start tomorrow morning."
